If you do decide to apply, have patience. It can take up to 9 months for the records to arrive unless they or their widow applies.

TBH, we were very grateful that FiL is still around to interpret his. To the uninitiated the abbreviations might as well be a foreign language!

"Differences to the previous act
The (1948) act changed the age range from 18-41 to 17-21 and increased the period of National Service required from 6 to 18 months....
....It was gradually phased out from 1960....ending in 1963".

So 'when' depends on your FiL's yob.
'Where' would/could be influenced by which Service he was in, and what ever Conflicts were on at the time.

Can your OH, his siblings or your mother-in-law remember any thing?
Without clues, you might have to apply for a copy of his records from the MOD. Unfortunately, the 3 Services have different addresses to apply to - not sure how you'd get around that. £30 unless he or your mother in law can sign the application form

Does anyone out there have any ideas how to find out where and when my father in law would have done his national Service please .
