Many thanks for the information. It also accounts for the fact that I can't find him in the 1861 census and that he is listed as a pensioner in 1881 |

Looks like he was in the 2nd Battalion (Service No. 1146) and then the 1st Battalion (Service No. 952). |

great grandad was born Henry Gilby in London 1842, and died in Essex in 1916. |

You could try searching FMP in the British Army Service Records database but not all records have survived. |

My great grandfather was in the Military Barracks, Regent Road, Salford for the 1871 census as a private in the 8th Foot. Can anybody tell me what the might have been doing in Salford at this time and how I can get more information |
