My father in law would not have been able to serve in the forces because he only had
one eye However I have a photograph of him in army uniform with a small cross within a circle on each arm there is a badge on his hat but I cant make out the design can anyone help with this query.

It may be a medical uniform. Royal Army Medical Corp.

Medical Orderly.
Embroidered red Geneva cross within a yellow circle worn on the sleeve by Medical Orderlies mainly in the Royal Army Medical Corps,but often seen in WW I photographs being worn in Infantry or other units also

I was not aware that he was able to serve because of his disability he never talked
about his service

On the new thread you mentioned that he may have been in Nottingham during the war where he met his wife.
My Lincs lot were for ever trotting over to Notts to match, hatch and despatch, so don't assume they met due to war work
