Welcome to the boards Carol

At least 70% of WW1 records were destroyed during WW2 bombing - those that survive are held on Ancestry.

This is his medal card which you may already have

Name: A J Bennett
Military Year: 1914-1915
Rank: Private
Medal Awarded: 1914-15 Star
Regiment or Corps: Leicestershire Regiment
Regimental Number: 10749

The image says he embarked 27.9.15 and was discharged 24.12.18 - The 8 is a bit smudged and could be a 9

The image for the SWB states that he enlisted 24 Aug 1914. He must have been one of the earliest volunteers. .
The reason for his discharge is given as Wounded. His declared age was 27
