Would be really grateful for any military info on the above. Served in Dorset Reg WW1 service number was 16258. Also interested in service medals awarded.

This could be him- he moved to Hampshire Regiment.

He has Dorsets stamped on the one medal I know about. would it normally be the case if serving with different regiments that the first regiment mentioned or the last on the medal?

I'm not sure- but it looks like both of Arnold's medals were awarded under the Dorset regiment- sending another document confirming this; Individuals entitled to Victory and British War medal- it confirms that both medals were inscribed for the Dorset regiment.

I sent email. Just trying to find out his date of joining up. The 2nd Dorsets seem to have been posted to India.

I am trying to find out when Arnold Mills joined up and where he served. He was definitely in the 2nd Dorsets and then transferred to the Hants Reg.

Unfortunately at least 70% of WW1 service records were destroyed during WW2 bombing. Arnold's may be amongst them.

There are only about 3 sets of records for A Mills, and none for Arnold

Quote - Simple rule: if a man did not qualify for a 1914 or 1914-15 Star, he did not see service in a theatre of war before 1916. End quote

Note - "see service in a theatre of war" would imply not training in the UK

The Military Service Act of 27 January 1916 brought conscription into effect for the first time in the war.

Every British male subject who
- on 15 August 1915 was ordinarily resident in Great Britain and who had attained the age of 19 but was not yet 41

Unless he volunteered, he was probably conscripted once he reached his 19th birthday.
