Our Great Great Grandfather Joseph WATERS was in the British Army 1793-1814.
He was in the 13th Light Dragoons in the Peninsula War at the Battle of Vittoria in 1811.
I trying to understand how he could have children born 1809-1822 in Wexford Ireland while in that unit.
Was that possible?
Did they have “time off”?
Or perhaps you could redirect me to an appropriate historian.

They have a section for queries.

The National Archives have 3 records for Joseph Waters who served in the 13th Dragoons, although I think 2 are for the same man (b Monaghan). The images of these records can be viewed on the FindMyPast site.

Then, as now, regiments served abroad for periods and were back in the UK for periods, so no reason why children should be born in the home country.

Do you have DOB and POB for Joseph?

I see from your tree that your Joseph is the one b Monaghan.

He also seems to have served in Canada. The image gives his occupation as Weaver and under "Complaint" it says "Diseased Testicle and Worn out in Service; the pension rate isn't very clear but I think it says 1/- (one shilling) a day.

You have filled in a lot of blanks, and I am thinking he is definitely "our man"
One unresolved point is whether he could be in the 44th Regt in 1809 (according to baptism of a daughter at Wexford Ireland) and be in the 13th Dragoons at discharge in 1814.
And how do I check the Churchill Monaghan 1776 birth/baptism?
