there are a few baptisms with parents Samuel Anderson and Christiana in Yarmouth around the right time

you can see all of the results here, for baptisms in Norfolk 1800-1840 with father Samuel

there is certainly room for a child born in 1820

given the names, I might wonder whether they were of Scottish origin

I think I have found him

James Annerson

I do expect this is the same couple as Samuel and Christiana in the other baptisms

Thanks for everyone's help and tolerating my inadequacies in replying.
I have found James in the 1841 census at Winchester barracks confirming him as a soldier. His marriage to Amellia in 1849 confirms him in the 46th foot. A visit to the PRO in Kew found his reg number, 1401, and his death in December in the Crimea in 1854.
The Annerson connection is interesting which I have followed leads to the Annison surname.
I have a copy of the original BC James Annerson d.o.b 17/02/1820 which has Samual and Elizabeth as the parents. I also have a copy of Samual and Elizabeth, nee Hodda, has the surname Annison. How can I be sure that the these are my ancestors?

Well David, for starters, it would have been a very good idea to tell us you had this information so I didn't spend half an hour finding it ........

I just tried to find the Annison Hodda marriage at familysearch but the site has gone down on me

you could give that full information too maybe, date and place

the site is back ...

Samuel Annison
Name: Samuel Annison
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth Hodda
Event Date: 02 Dec 1817
Event Place: St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M16315-4 , System Origin: England-ODM , GS Film number: 1526456

she is also transcribed as Hodds and Madden in different transcriptions so presumably you have checked the original ... I have to say the image at familysearch looks like Hodds to me - it is much clearer in the name of the witness Ann Hodds

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12309-11589-54?cc=1416598

and remember that since both were illiterate (signed with X) they likely did not know how their names were spelt

it all certainly fits together

the only way ever to be sure of descent from a person is DNA

you need another descendant whose DNA can be tested to see whether there is a match

the most certain way of determining this is descendants in the male line - son of a son of a son ... - to match the Y-DNA

autosomal testing can also be done to try to identify cousinship

as an example, a male member of my family did YDNA testing for me, and turned out to be a 100% match with a person living in the US whom I had already 'met' through records at Ancestry, who is also a great-great-grandson of my family member's great-great-grandfather ... so now we know for sure that both our families are 'legitimate' descendants of that man

you would want to find descendants of the other children whose baptisms show the same parents to ask them to test

(testing at a company like FTDNA, which automatically sends you matches no matter what the surname, can also find other branches of a family or relations from farther back on a tree)

otherwise, all you have is the existence of these records that fit your James to a T, and the absence of any other records that would fit your James, which is the best many of us can do once we get back to the early 1800s and before

Well Joonie, I'm sorry you think I have wasted your time, but you have confirmed my research which is great for me.
The illiterate avenue is good, I guess word of mouth and interpretation was the way it was. I'm uncertain if I should persue the Annison line or not.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NTQR-NZ9

Name: Susan Annison
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 27 Jun 1825
Christening Place: Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
Father's Name: Samuel Annison
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C01755-7 , System Origin: England-EASy , GS Film number: 1526328 , Reference ID: It. 16 p90

1841 census

Name: Elizth Annison
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1801
Gender: Female
Where born: Norfolk, England
Civil Parish: Great Yarmouth
Hundred: Great Yarmouth
County/Island: Norfolk
Registration district: Great Yarmouth
Sub-registration district: Northern

Elizth Annison 40 charwoman
Santo Annison 20 labourer
Christ Annison 15
Susan Annison 15

this certainly looks like the mother Elizabeth in those various christening records. Susan and Christiana were under 20 so their age was rounded down to 15.

the eldest child in the list is actually Sam'l, a son aged 20

Annison is seeming like perhaps the right name, and James's name got messed up when he moved away

there are numerous Annisons in the vicinity in 1841
