I have and uncle killed just after ww2 finished (i Think). He is buried in the War Graves in Austria. Would there be a death certificate available in this country or do you have to apply somewhere else.

If he is listed on http://www.cwgc.org/ then he was probably part of or attached to the forces. Don't forget that Austria and Germany were under occupation for many years following their defeat!

Once you've found a CWGC entry, look for a death reg on this site - with a bit of luck there will be a reference number amongst the military records. Use those to order from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I didn't think death certificates were issued for WW11 deaths?

I've looked at my chaps on CWG and there is only a grave ref in Anzio

I may be wrong though, googled trying to find out but cant find anything to confirm or deny :-S

Whether or not you are able to obtain a death certificate, if you do a search for him on the following sites you may be lucky enough to find some information about him and, possibly, a photo of the grave/headstone/memorial....

Death certs are available - as Detective says, search on GR for the ref, & then you can order.

They're not very informative. There is an example of a WW2 war deaths register page via the link at the foot of the page:

As you might guess from the URL, these are for Scottish servicemen, but for war deaths, Scottish d.certs are pretty much the same as English ones.
