I am looking for any information on the my husbands Grandfather & GG Grandfathers service records. Ernest may be under Devine I believe he changed the family spelling to a small de.
He was born Dec 1888 Plumstead, London. Father Arthur Devine, mother Sarah. I was told that he played the bugle and had something to do with painting the Heraldrys. His Grandfather was James Devine born c 1790s in Ireand married to Margaret. He was listed as a Master Gunner in 1841 & 51 census in Guernsey but I don't know where he was stationed before although several of the older children were listed as born in Ireland but don't know where.
Grateful for any assistance.

Although his pob is given as Plumstead, its more than likely that his birth was registered within the Dartford District. As there was 6 weeks to register a birth, birth late in one year could have been registered in the first quarter of the next.

Strange as you say there's a 117km difference in places. I believe that 1891 census is his family. I think at least one of Arthur's elder brothers was also in the military. Ernest Grandfather, James last post seems to be at the arsenal at Greenwich.

*IF* it's relevant, then it's slightly different to ones we normally see. Apart from the usual Victory, British and 14 Star camapign medals, there is a notation that he was also awarded a Clasp and Roses.

Clasp to the 1914 Star

A bar clasp inscribed "5 Aug. to 22 Nov. 1914" was given to all those who qualified for the 1914 Star and who served under fire. Since the same ribbon is used with the 1914-15 Star, holders of the 1914 Star were permitted to wear a small silver rosette on their ribbon when the decoration itself is not worn. On the medal index cards this is usually noted as the "Clasp and Roses" or "C&R" .It was necessary to apply for the issue of the clasp.

You may not be aware that over 60% of WW1 records were destroyed in WW2 bombing. The medal cards survived because they were stored in a different place.

It is possible that his records might have been transferred for safe keeping to Eire after they were granted/won independence and may have survived.

When did Ernest marry? Do you have his marriage certificate? Just wondering what he put as his occupation? If he was in the forces prior to WW1 he may have been still in there when he married.

His first marriage was 1924 in St Aubyns. My mother-in-law said he was a painter/decorator the same as his father in law David Evans.

Don't have his marriage certificate yet as just started this side. My mother-in-law didn't discuss her early years.

So his daughter said he was a painter/decorator, he may have put that as his occupation, but there a slight chance that he didn't....... maybe worth a chance though????
