My grandfather Walter William Green b1881 we believe was in the Essex regiment during WW1 but I can find no evidence..... any suggestions?
Also my father Thomas Douglas Stuart McKie b1918 I believe was in Jersey/Guernsey during WW2 but I do not know the regiment but he did train as a physical trainer in the army and he was also a trained butcher. I also know that he trained at the Colcheste, Essexr barracks but came from the NE of England.......any suggestions. I will be really grateful for any help with the above.
Regards :-)

For WW2 Army records you need this site
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html
BUT they are not online and you need to apply for them.

same record cont'd
Transferred compulsorily 15.1.18 to No 8 Training Battn RAMC.
1.3.18 Transferred to Ist Birmingham War Hospital Rednall.
There is more but I find it hard to read. If this is the right record, I can pm you the image.
The card he signed for receipt of the Victory medal and the British War medal is dated 20th March 1922. The address is still 104 Harwich Rd. Service no is given as 136074, and card says for 'your services with the Royal Army Medical Corps'.
Walter signs as W. W. Green.
EDIT: I assume his change of regimental number reflects his transfer to the RAMC.

The Medal Index card for the Walter W Green I've already given service details for:
British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 Name: Walter Green Regiment or Corps: Essex Regiment, Royal Army Medical Corps Regimental Number: 32469, 136074
It confirms 32469 was his regimental number for the Essex Regiment, and 136074 was his regimental number for the RAMC. His rank is given as Pt .
If this is your grandfather, I would be happy to pm you the images of his record, just let me know if they are relevant, and if you want them, to puzzle out the rest of the detail of hisWWI service .

If Chris has the correct death for Marilyn's grandfather, then I must have the wrong service record , as 'my' Walter William Green was discharged 28.2.19 at Woking, heading to 104 Harwich Road, Colchester.and looks to have remained in the UK after his transfer to the RAMC in 1918.
He also signed the receipt card for his medals as W. W. Green in 1922.

I noticed the birth record for the Walter William whose 1911 census record I posted was:
Births Mar 1881 GREEN Walter William Stow, S. 4a 634
However there are also these births:
Births Jun 1892 Green Walter Stow, S. 4a 799 Green Walter Arthur Stow, S. 4a 798
who could also be candidates for the soldier from the Suffolk regiment whose death Chris posted.
The CWGC version of the death gave no age for the deceased.
This one at least, was born Hessett.

Thank you all so very much for your replies. My grandfather did live at 104 Harwich Road and his wife was Mary Ann Curtis so Kucinta has identified the correct person. Any further information will be wonderful. Thank you so much. Can I ask if there are any suggestions about my father Thomas Douglas Stuart McKie during WW2 (W W Green was my maternal grandfather)?
I am so sorry for not being able to reply earlier but I am staying in France where reception is not very constant.
Again thank you for the information on my grandfather.
Regards :-)

HI Marilyn - will reply to your pm, and send you the service record images as promised.
Glad we do have the right man.
Re your father's WWII records, you will need to follow Glitterbaby's suggestion as posted early in the thread.
There is very little available online about WWII personnel apart from records of death in action (eg CWGC site), and some prisoner of war records (on ancestry)
