There are two places carrying the same name (there might be more)

Alton is a historic market town and civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It has a population of 17,816 according to the 2011 census and is administered by the East Hampshire district council. Wikipedia

The other one is in Staffordshire. Its current claim to fame is that it has the site of a theme park close by (Alton Towers)

It would be easy to assume that as your guy enlisted in a Northamptonshire Regiment, its more likely to be the Alton in Staffs. Unfortunately army recruiters did travel around the country with their regiments - if they were stationed in or near the Hampshire Alton at one point, he could have come from there!

When you don't know the region/country its a good idea to use Google maps. If you need to work out distances, then use the 'directions' feature from A to B. Although it gives distance and time by car, it would give you a good indication of the distance our ancestors would needed to have travelled on foot, cart, coach or horseback

Hi,

Have a rello who enlisted in this regiment in 1811 which looks like Alton, UK.

Does anyone have any idea where this place in please?
