Hello,

I am trying to trace my my great great grandad.
He is called Charles Thompson, served and died in ww1.

I have no date of birth, or date of death.
I am stumped, I can't find him, I have no information to link to him to know which one was my grandfather.

Help?!

Welcome to the boards Jenna.

Have you worked backwards from yourself, your parents and your grandparents so that you have some idea of where your ancestors were born?

If you work backwards you should get to a point where one of your ancestors is on the 1911 census which will make it easier to find the correct Charles Thompson from those whose deaths are recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves site.

If you want to give more details then someone will try to help you.

Is he from your mother or your father's side of the family?

Yes I have worked back and got stuck at Charles.

They are all from the west yorkshire area, he got married in barnsley in 1912.
I have searched for his birth certificate and can't find which one he is as I don't know when he was born. I'm guessing maybe 1885-1985.

I have searched him, his wife and children in the census and no luck.
I'm guessing they wont be on the 1922 one as they were'nt married, then he went to war and died so won't have been home for the 1921 census.

He is my mums, dads, dads, dad.

I have check the Commonwealth War Graves site and narrowed it down to two men I think as my mum is positive he was in a yorkshire regiment and does not have a middle name

Which marriage is his?

Have you bought the marriage cert which would normally give the name and occupation of both Charles and his father - you might then be able to pick them up in the 1911 census.

Marriages Mar 1912
Hough Mary J Thompson Barnsley 9c 245
Thompson Charles Hough Barnsley 9c 245

Marriages Jun 1912
Thompson Charles West Barnsley 9c 351
West Sarah M Thompson Barnsley 9c 351

Do you know when any child/children of the marriage was/were born, which should help confirm which marriage is correct if you don't know already.

What age does he give on the marriage certificate - if you have it.

He married Mary Jane Hough.
I am going to purchase his marriage certificate.
We was supposed to inherit his badges and everything to do with the war he was in but another family member sold them so I can't even find out his soldier number.

Thank you for all of the information!

No i don't have access to ancestry, so thank you for that information!

I have now got contact with other family members so really hoping to get hold of his service number or possibly what regiment he was in. Well any information really.

I will look into all of these possibilitys but like said before it was a very common name and with no other information its proving quite difficult

I have just found the Banns for Mary & Charles's marriage: his parish is given as Darton and hers as Woolley (she is there with her family in 1911). The Charles living with the Pybone family seems the best match. I will send Jenna both the images.
