Hi all yes I have a birth certificate for my great grandad born in November 1914 and it says his father was Thomas Hudson and his occupation was an officer on a training ship "exmouth". But then ww1 broke out and I was told he died in november 1914 battle of Ypres same month his son was born and further lead to believe his wife had other children in 1917 1920 1926 with the surname Hudson and was wondering how this is as he died unless he didn't die, she married another Hudson or something. I am well in a pickle. I've seen Thomas's name on grays war memorial in Essex but don't know if it is him or not??? Any help on these topics would be great many thanks

re your question as to the children born after 1914 ....................
it's quite simple .................
The child of a married woman is assumed to be the child of her husband, whether or not he is alive or dead. That is, unless the birth father allows his name to be put on the certificate ............ in which case he had to be present at the time of registration.
So ......... if Thomas Hudson did die in 1914, and she had further children, they are illegitimate, but have been assigned HER surname which was legally the name of her husband.
To find out more, you would have to buy the relevant birth certificates, and see what has been entered on them re the father.

I'm puzzled ..........................
Thomas Hudson was presumably a sailor, if he was an officer on board the training ship "Exmouth"
Were sailors involved in the land battles, such as Ypres??????????????????
what would he have been doing there?

Daniel, You have been asked to delete the duplicate threads
Why have you not done so?
I would seriously question the information you have been given,
you say Thomas's birth cert states, "occupation was an officer on a training ship exmouth"...........Does it also state Deceased?
If Thomas died just before the birth of a son why was that son not named after his deceased father? The new born son's birth was not registered until the march quarter 1915 so registered in 1915 (ref my question Does it also state Deceased? )
Their are also no further marriages listed for mum Ada and looking at the pattern of births they are fairly regular with the gap between the 1920 and 1926 birth being the only one that stands out,
As sylvia said If Thomas died whilst serving as an Officer in the Navy what was he doing at Ypres?

Not seeing a birth in Ulverston for a Thomas Hodgson Hudson or a Thomas Hudson but their is this
Births Mar 1883 HODGSON Thomas Ulverston 8e 812
he may have adopted the name Hudson, Possibly after a second marriage for his mother?
Or was he illigitimate and then his mother married a Hudson?
There is a Will for him see https://www.gov.uk/probate-search
You can download the will it will cost £6
