Thanks for this! He left the Army in 1851 and that's the last I heard of him - don't even know whether he drew his money or not. I know he appears on a list of the regiment's delayed pensions, but that's about it.
Thanks again.

Yep a senior moment....

He got 6 pound 1 shilling 8p per normal year and 6 pound 2 shilling on a leap year.

The leap year figure is 6 pound 10 new pence.

A rough idea of it's worth today is multiply by 2 every 10 years so for example if he left the army in 1923 it would be worth just over 3100 pounds per year now.

20 shillings to the pound I think DC.

It doesn't mean that he got 4 old pence for every day that he served. It just means that he got a pension of 4d. per day which works out at 2 shillings and 4 pence a week.

A weekly pension of 2/4d

Two shillings and four pennies

ie 12 pennies to the shilling.

You can work out the annual pension 12 shillings to the pound.... :-D

Mathematics has never been my strong suit.

Would someone please work out a soldier's pension for me? He was granted, on discharge, 4 (old) pence a day, having served 15 years, 284 days.

How much pension would he have entitlement to, please?

Thank you,

John
