If he is not there, there will be records at the National Archives for his service, such as Muster Rolls, where his birthplace might well be given.

Yes, thank you, you're right about the marriage but not the death (that was in Bangalore). I wish I could have replied earlier and saved you the trouble you so kindly took, but GR locked me out for several days.

I know about Richard Raymond's life after his marriage - he is my great-grandfather. What I cannot find is his birth, and don't understand why the SWB do not have any record of him. I can find a likely birth in India, but that then begs the question of how he came to be in the SWB. I will go the BL and check the L/MIL for Madras to see if it gives his origins.

Does his marriage cert give his father's occupation?

Am trying to trace origins of Richard Raymond who went out to India in the 1870s/1880s with the 2nd Batt S Wales Borderers. Born c1853. He was a L/Sgt in 1883 when he married. Family story is that he was Irish but I can’t find any trace. Marriage cert says his father was James Raymond. SWB have no record of him but he couldn’t have put incorrect information on marriage and children’s birth certificates in a small cantonment. Any help gratefully received.
