Looking for any information on Joseph Entwistle of Bolton who was killed on the 27th of September 1918 in France. Served with the Manchester Regiment. Died near Marquion in France at or in the Battle of the Canal du Nord. Any information either about the Battle or the Regiment at that time would be useful and really welcome .... cheers

Richard G (great nephew of Joseph)

Marquion was captured by the 1st Canadian and 11th Division on 27 September 1918. Quarry Cemetery (called also the Chalk Pit Cemetery) was made by fighting units after the battle and used during the following month. One grave was brought in from Marquion German Cemetery after the Armistice.

Quarry Cemetery contains 68 burials of the First World War.

Have you asked for a look up on ancestry to see if his service record survived and also what medals he was awarded

RE: "Any information either about the Battle or the Regiment at that time would be useful and really welcome"

As you'll have seen from Roy's post, there was Canadian involvement in the operations at both Canal du Nord and Marcoing - in fact very heavy involvement. There is a section abt this in Ch 14 of Nicholson:

Author: Nicholson, G.W.L
Official History of the Canadian Army in the First World War: Candian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919

http://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhh-dhp/his/oh-ho/detail-eng.asp?BfBookLang=1&BfId=22

I happen to have a copy just of Ch 14 and Map 13 - I've pm'ed these to Richard.
