I have just discovered that my great grandfather served with the East Surrey Regiment from 1914. His details confirmed his occupation was a 'carter' |

The East Surrey Regiment has an excellent website, giving their War Diary from mobilisation to France from their barracks in Dublin in August 1914 and it names many names, so you might just find what you are looking for. They were badly mauled at the first battle of Mons that August. (It was in this regiment' 1st Battalion that Capt Robert Campbell served before being captured and then, uniquely, in 1916 being allowed home to England on parole for two weeks to see his dieing mother.)
