Have come across a few useful (free) sites lately so thought worth adding:

There are several more on Internet Archive https://archive.org/

My son was born at BMH Rinteln, Germany in 1993. Does anybody know where I can find information on children born to service families in Germany. I would be most appreciate if anybody could let me know.

MILLITARY RESEARCH TIP for those who are in charge of GR.....

Today, the 11th day of the 11th month, is Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day. This is the date (one hundred years ago, as it happens) when the Armistice was signed at 11am, and it signalled the official ending to World War 1. It is a memorial day observed by Commonwealth of Nations member states (and some non Commonwealth states) to remember their armed forces who have died in the line of duty .

It comes around at the same time every year, so for most people it is very easy to remember, and is commemorated by the wearing of, or showing, a red poppy, as a mark of respect to all those who have fallen in war.
Note - many GR members have used a picture of a red poppy as their avatar this week, as a mark of respect, but GR itself has used no such marker.

Hello!

I'm trying to find out information about my great uncle, who was in the RE (Royal Engineers) in WW1. If I know his service number, is there a way to find further information about regiment, service record etc?

I'm very new at researching military matters, so any advice would be most appreciated.

Thank you,
Caroline

Hi Polly

WW2 records will still be with the MOD. See the link on the first post on this thread for the forms to order them. Unless he or his widow can sign them, they will cost you£30 with a likely wait of up to 9 months.

One found the other day while looking for Naval records. It contains lots of snippets of fascinating information for anyone with Royal Navy ancestors. (Did you know that sailors were issued with knitted drawers?) :-) :-)

I couldn't find my uncles' names listed on the Forces War Records PoW site, however I did find one on another site, Captive Memories, which includes an Oral History Project where I was able to hear him speaking in 2 short clips, presumably from a longer interview . You may find your PoW ancestor here too...

And one more, on this one you can search for your PoW. I found both my uncles listed here, yet they do not appear on other lists
