Unfortunately, I don't think Ann took note of the info concerning the ER

ErikaH mentioned that John, Angela and daughter (who is not Samantha) are on the Electoral Roll to 2007.

It's the daughter who is listed until 2007. Angela and John are at the same address until 2019 - so probably still there as suggested.

Mary Reilly McColgan's mother Margaret Simpson is the subject of that thread.

At her marriage to Edward Malarkie on 31 Dec 1912, Margaret's name is given as Margaret Turnbull McPeak Simpson, and her parents as John Simpson, tailor, and Elizabeth Henderson.


I'll stop now, as this is not what Ann's asking about, and I expect she knows all this already .
She's probably the "fellow Genes member" whom Brian mentions.

I had a look at certs, just to satisfy my own curiosity. I know it's not what Ann's looking for.

This turns out to be her birth, in Leith. The surname is mistranscribed on SP, and I've reported it:

Address: 186 Nottingham Road, Belper, Derbyshire, now engaged in War Service.
Herbert's parents: Walter Hitchcock, railway ganger, and Elizabeth Hitchcock, maiden surname Cockayne.

Mary Reilly McColgan, 24, spinster, box factory machinist, and Sergeant, ATS.
Address: 30 Redbraes Place, Edinburgh, now engaged in War Service.
Mary's parents: James McColgan, company porter, deceased.
Margaret McColgan, previously Malarkie, ms Simpson.

Witnesses were Margaret S Burnett, 30 Redbraes Place, Edinburgh, and J Green, 53 Edge-hill Road, Leicester.


Mary's father James died in Leith in 1924. His mother's maiden name was Reilly.
He was born in Glasgow in 1881.

The 1982 death certificate for Mary Reilly Hitchcock may give her place of birth.(GRO)

As Argyllgran says, the marriage certificate might be useful if you want to reasearch the Mccoglan line.

I would think that the woman who married Herbert was Irish by birth

Interestingly, the only birth of a Mary Reilly McColgan (or other spelling) in Scotlands People is one in 1946 in Edinburgh. I wonder if she could be an illegitimate child of "your" Mary, born just before the marriage ??? Unfortunately, you'd have to buy a copy of the birth cert to find out - £12 (plus postage) via Scotlands People - as the birth is too recent for you to be able to view it on the site.

I realise you're really looking for Herbert's living relatives.

Walter was the son of Thomas & Lucy Hitchcock and have a number of siblings.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry & Emily Cockayne, also with siblings.

Ann could possibly find relatives from this wider family if she so wishes.

Added. I think Johns marriage to Angela may be a second marriage Samantha seems to have a diferent mother.

It looks as though John may have beeen an only child and with Herbert losing his brother at such a younge age you have some difficulties finding relatives on that side. You will need to see if Elizabeth Cockayne and Herberts grandparents had siblings.
If MaryReilly Mccolgan was born in Scotland then you need to look at Scotsland People.

Checking on Zoopla, there is no record of the house having been sold.
Look on the ER on here...............you could then write to them at the address, enclosing SAE
