The other thing to remember is that your mum "will not tell us why" she was "sent away" - so it may not have been because of pregnancy.

Nor should you assume that the only alternative reason must be a mental health problem, as you suggest.

If your mum's still living ( I assume she is, from the wording of your posts) , does she know that you are investigating things she doesn't want you to know about?

There is absolutely nothing to suggest that child born in 1956 was adopted - the additional name is due to the mother being recorded under two surnames

If she was pregnant then she could have been sent anywhere to a mother and baby home or a family friend or relatives out of the area

As has been posted there are 20 plus Rhodes births

If your mum was sent away, one would assume the birth wasn't registered in Birmingham.

There are 20 or so births registered in 1956/57 where the child is Rhodes and mother's maiden names is Rhodes

Unfortunately, even if she was adopted by the Mcdonalds, and kept her first name, Ann McDonald is too common a name for us to be able to identify later records for her without more information.

As her mother is named as "Mcdonald or Rhodes" on the birth record, are you sure that her mother's name was Rhodes - which would mean that her father was a Mcdonald? Or could her mother have been a Mcdonald and her father a Rhodes?

If you are right in thinking that she was adopted by the Mcdonalds, then presumably that would be the family of one of her parents.

But as Shirley points out, any adopted surname would not show on the birth record, and so she might have been adopted by a completely different family.

Adoption certificates are not online, as they are confidential.

Have you actually bought the birth certificate

She is registered in both names that indicates both parents are named but they weren’t married

Any adoption name wouldn’t show on a birth certificate so McDonald isn’t her adopted surname

Do you have any info on her parents that may indicate she connected to yourself

thank you for geting intouch. I think she may have been adopted by the Mcdonald family. Her birth mum Rhodes. Not 100% sure but she could be a half sister to me

As you've posted on "Find Living Relatives", I'm assuming you hope to find where Ann is now, though your post doesn't make it clear.


Having looked up her birth record, I see that her mother had the two names Rhodes and Mcdonald, and Ann was also registered under both surnames.


As Ann's whole name will probably have been changed on adoption, we have no idea what name she has now, and no way of finding out, unfortunately.

Adoption information is confidential, and not available online.

If you're a birth relative, you can add your name to the Adoption Contact Register, and then if Ann also has registered with them, or does so in future, you may be put in touch with each other.
It's a gamble - but you never know!

"Relative" includes relation by blood (including half blood), marriage or civil partnership.
