It's amazing how many people do just ask to see a tree without any explanation!
I'm afraid your message to the "matches" for Mary Riordan is rather confusing.
You said, "When Julia Riordan (Reardon)B July 20 1855 D 1935 registered her daughter Julia Cahill B 1889 D June 27 1915 Mary Riordan was listed as her grandmother, I wonder if we have the same Mary Redmond.. . ."
A woman should be listed on a family tree under her maiden name, so unless Mary was unmarried, or unless people have just listed her as Riordan because they don't know her maiden name (although they shouldn't do that) , the Mary Riordan "matches" are unlikely to be her, unfortunately.
Mary Redmond? Did you mean to say Julia Redmond or Mary Riordan?
Also, young Julia's birth was registered under the name Riordan, not Cahill. However, hopefully an actual relative will know that she was known as Cahill later, and will understand what you mean. It will be interesting to know if you receive any positive replies. Good luck!
As so many Irish records no longer exist, it may not be possible to find out any more about Mary.

ArgyllGran When I say matches I mean the little purple star you get on the corner of the entry. I get purple 7 I click view and get 5 matches for Mary Riordan to those 5 matches I sent the following message:- When Julia Riordan (Reardon)B July 20 1855 D 1935 registered her daughter Julia Cahill B 1889 D June 27 1915 Mary Riordan was listed as her grandmother, I wonder if we have the same Mary Redmond. I look forward to hearing from you Take care and have fun Shell x I don't just ask to see family tree that just rude. I am aware that people can die and there trees remain I have matched with my Great Aunts family tree and she has sadly passed away years ago. It is frustrating as she would be a gold mine of information and it would have nice to share an interest with her.
I am finding it frustrating that these boards don't allow you upload information. I am also a little annoyed GR don't ping you when you get a reply to a thread lol I like Facebook you get a message to say someone has posted on thread or a thread you are following.
Take care and have fun Shell x :-D

I'm not sure where you're finding those tree matches.
Looking at "Search all member trees" under "Search" at top right of this page, the only Julia Riordan 1854+/-1 born in Ireland is your own entry..
The only other Julia Riordan born 1855 on any tree on GR is one born in Canada, so I don't see how you can be getting "a couple of matches".
Be aware that "Tree matches" from the purple star beside names on your tree are only people who happen to have the same name and year of birth as your relative. Place of birth is not taken into account by the GR algorithm, so that "matches" are often not related to you at all.
Also be aware that when you send a message to any "owner" of a tree on GR, there is no guarantee of a reply. GR never deletes a tree, so a tree owner may have died, or changed email address, or for many other reasons may not receive your message, or be unable to reply.
Always send a proper message explaining your interest - don't just ask to see their tree, as that's likely to be ignored.
You say these "matches" give Mary Riordan as Julia's mum - how do you know that ? You can't see anyone's GR tree without the owner's permission.

It is so confusing. Thank you ArgyllGran. On the plus side today I downloaded my GEDcom from Ancestry and have actualy managed to upload it to Genes Reunited. I now have a family tree and have a couple of tree matches on Julia Riordan and this has Mary Riordan as her mum so I have left it and that has given me 5 tree matches for her. I have reached out to try and find more information. Take care and have fun Shell x

It's not unusual for a woman who had used a husband or partner's surname at any time, to have any or all of the surnames on, say, a later marriage or death cert, as well as her maiden name.
But confusing in this particular case, where different children have different MMNs Riordan and Cahill are understandable (her birth surname Riordan, and her father's name Cahill by which she was known in 1901 and when she married). Don't know where Coughlan comes from.
The surnames used on the children's birth certs would depend on what the informant in each case told the registrar. At Elizabeth's birth, Peter said Julia's name was Riordan - which was her official birth name. For Henry and Mary Jane's births, Julia's mother Julia was the informant, and she gave the name Cahill, which is what young Julia had been known as when growing up, and the name she used when she married.
Margaret's birth in 1913 is the puzzle. Informant was Julia Redmond, mother - ie - young Julia herself. It says she made her mark - but young Julia could read and write, according to the 1901 census. And why the name Coughlan, goodness knows. Perhaps it's a mistake by the registrar - the next birth below Margaret's has mmn Coughlan, so maybe the registrar copied the name again by mistake when transferring the details from the original papers to his final copy. Or perhaps he thought Julia said Coughlan when she was really saying Cahill.

I have just read a post from my mum on the facebook properly and she says about JULIA CAHILL "Even stranger when she had my mother and siblings she had her name as nee Coughlan, nee Cahill, nee Riordan so it was very confusing"
Is it normal for one woman to use so many surnames?

Thanks for the Facebook link.
However, I see that the birth record for Julia Riordan, with parents Sweeney and Cahill was just a suggestion by someone on the Facebook page.
That doesn't mean it's correct! And I'm still sure it's not.

You keep saying that Julia Cahill was born 1890, but you have accepted that the 1889 Riordan (or no surname, according to you) birth is hers.

Interestingly, two of Peter and Julia's children (Henry 1911 and Mary Jane 1912) have mmn Cahill. The third, Elizabeth 1915, has mmn Riordan. Can I have the links to these records please?
I have just read a post from my mum on the facebook properly and she says about JULIA CAHILL "Even stranger when she had my mother and siblings she had her name as nee Coughlan, nee Cahill, nee Riordan so it was very confusing"
Julia Cahill my Great-grandmother born1890 Died June 27 1915 and Peter Redmond my Great-grandfather B 1888 D1936 had 5 children. I do not have dates of birth or death for any but my Gran. Henry Redmond, Margaret Redmond my (Grandmother Aug 28 1913 D July 1 1984), Mary Redmond, Peter Redmond, Elizabeth Redmond. Unfortunately they are dead. Elizabeth Redmond married William Cronin and Liz Cronnin did a family tree but as she has passed I can not contact her. My mum was speaking to her daughter a couple of weeks ago and I know they where chasing the wrong Peter Redmond they had him as a scholar in Dublin my mum has found Peter Redmond farm labourer Cork. Julia died 11 days after giving birth to Elizabeth. Julia Riordan moved in and raised my gran and her family.

I'm afraid I still don't understand why you believe the Julia with "parents" John Sweeney and Julia Cahill is the right one.
As Julia 1855 is unmarried in the 1901 census, I am convinced that the 1889 birth for her daughter Julia is the correct one, showing unmarried mother Julia Riordan and grandmother MARY.
I don't know what the Facebook site is that you mention, but if someone has that record on their tree, it doesn't necessarily mean it's correct. Trees on Ancestry often have huge mistakes on them because people have clutched at a record which sounds vaguely right, without researching properly, and the same is bound to be the case on other family tree sites..
ADDED:
PM received from Michelle, confirming that the 1889 birth is the one she does believe is correct for young Julia.
However, she assumed that because no father is named, that meant that Julia was registered with no surname.
I have replied explaining that she had her unmarried mother's surname, and again pointing out the grandmother's name MARY.
