When teaching his children their lessons he spat upeon their exercises, and dragged the girl about by the hair. He frequently threatened and beat his children "with great cruelty and called them vile names". 15 March 1889, 15 Forest Hill Road, he swore at Eliza, beat his daughter Julia, and caused Eliza to have an attack of hysteria. 1 April 1889, 15 Forest Hill Road, he swore at Eliza and called her vile names. 22 April 1889, left Eliza without means of support. By reason of " his ill treatment and misconduct as aforesaid" Eliza's health was greatly impaired.
