If Mary Dodds was your grandfather's mother, then he wasn't the David born in 1905 in Anstruther.

In which case, he doesn't appear to have been born in the UK.


Also, there is no record of a Mary Dodds marrying a David Cuthbert in the UK.

As Beryl married him in South Africa, perhaps he was born there.

I got the names from my grandfathers death certificate, Mary Dodds was definitely his mother but thats all it said, and that she died in Scotland. So i don't think Elizabeth Wilkie is the right person .

I think that this may be your grandmother's death. The only way to be sure would be to buy credits and look at the registration.

I posted your grandparents marriage on 25 October.

David Alexander Cuthbert married Elizabeth Wilkie in 1889 and they can be found together on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census records.

If David born 1905 in Anstruther is your grandfather, his mother seems to have been Elizabeth Wilkie.

Where did you find the name Mary Dodds, please?

I managed to get some details of my Grandfather's parents names. His father was also David Alexander Cuthbert and his wife was Mary Dodds. I have looked on Ancestry.com and Scotlandspeople sites but I am unable to find any details of either of them or their marriage. Not sure if anyone else could find anything? They both died in Scotland so I am assuming they both were born there

I wouldn't necessarily rule that McPherson out ArgyllGran.

Alexander Gibson McPherson was one of a large family. Although he only appears to have had one son ( haven't found a death for him) and one daughter who died in 2010 in Blairgowrie. The owner of that farm may have one of his brothers who then passed it on to a son who then retired and sold it in 2003.

Re the travel record posted by Kay, for D A Cuthbert going to Cape Town -

the address is written as Millhall, Aberlot, Arbroath .
Aberlot should be Arbirlot, and Millhall should probably be Millhill.

Currently, the occupier of the farm called Millhill at Arbirlot is a McPherson.

Perhaps related to Margaret McPherson (nee Cuthbert) ???
