I'm trying to locate the son of Ernest Whitmore & Mabel Day. John Raymond was born in Stoke on Trent in 1940. His parents separated sometime after his birth. He has an older sister, Rita Doris, who he may not have seen for many years. My mother is John's cousin.

Did he stay with his Mother, or Father, or was he adopted?

There is a marriage for a John R Whitmore in Stoke in 1961, which may be worth investigating. He may have also used the surname Harley.

Was Mabel E Day born in 1913?

As far as we know he stayed with his mother.

What makes you think he may have used another surname? His mother never remarried. Family lore indicates she did have another relationship which resulted in a child but that child was named as a Whitmore.

As for the other name maybe she lived with a Mr Harley and they were known as that surname too

Yes there is a sister born in 1949 whitmore /day who is also reg as Harley

Plus a son born in 1953 same type of reg. all Stoke reg district

Edited because Rita is on the electoral rolls to 2014 stil in stoke on Trent wth Ronald

There is a missing spouse on one entry for the 1961 marriage, but there are two entries one has got misplaced in entries for Lichfield, but it is in Stoke, matching reg can be found on freebmd
