Looking for my cousin who was given away at age around 6 weeks. Her name was Jane Valerio/Preston and born 24 May 1954, Chatham, Middlesex, Greater London. |

malyon the reason for the double registration is the usual one ... the mother was still married at the time ... |

It would be a good idea for Corinna to put a tree at this site (with a free membership) and include Jane under her birth surnames (just treat her as two different children), and also the younger siblings if they were adopted as well. |

There were two registrations because the parents of Jane were not married at the time of her birth. Her mother, Patricia was married to Mr. Valerio in 1950, so Valerio was her surname and as such the child was registered in her surname at the time. Mr. Preston must have gone to the register office with her and claimed paternity so the child was registered in his name too. The fact that she was illegitimate was the most likely reason for her being adopted out. |

As I said in reply to malyon's question about that: mother was still married. |
