a 1973 marriage might not be ruled out if the woman had been prevented from marrying by a previous marriage (athough in that case Arthur would not have been prevented from marrying Beryl!)

late-in-life marriages are not uncommonly couples who were together a long time and married only after a first spouse died

but the woman with that name born in 1926 had middle initial J and the marriage shows no middle initial.

On the other hand, a marriage for Arthur very shortly after his first wife died might not be unexpected, if they were (more or less) estranged at the time. But it would seem unusual for him to rush into marriage if he still had thoughts of Beryl ...

Do you know whether Arthur's name was on the other children's birth certificates (Susan's siblings), and if so did it show a middle name?

to me it sounds to late in time for his marriage 1973 after his last wife died.
maybe.

If he remained in Neath, and if he did marry again, there's a 1973 marriage in West Glamorgan district (which by that time included Neath), for an Arthur J Thomas.

No way of knowing if it's his marriage or not, without buying a copy of the cert to see the groom's age.
However, from birth records, it looks as if the bride may have been born in 1926 (unless she had been previously married, in which case her birth surname would be different) - so I suppose it could be "your" Arthur's marriage.

You can look up the details yourself on www.freebmd.org.uk

If it is his marriage, it's unlikely they had any children, given the bride's age.

he always told beryl that he would marry her but could not with his wife with cancer.
and then when he did come to ask her she had married reg. 1962
as far as we know that was the last contact with Arthur.

As Beryl and Reginald married in 4th qr of 1962, the Arthur J Thomas marriage in 2nd qr 1962 which I mentioned above can't be the right one, if he looked for her after she had married.

On the other hand, perhaps he was just hoping to resume their relationship, whether married or not.

hi,
we were told by my wife's birth mother that Arthur did re marry and went on to have more children after his wife died he did come looking for beryl before he re married but she had got married to Reginald Arnold in 1962 due to pressure from family.
98% sure its Arthur john Thomas but looking at Arthur James, Arthur j and just Arthur Thomas just encase.
sorry for confusion.
Stephen.

You're looking for children from a second marriage for Arthur after 1961.

Do you know that he did actually remarry?

There's a marriage of an Arthur J Thomas in Neath in Apr-June qr 1962. Seems rather soon, though - same quarter in which his first wife died (if his first wife was Joan - do we know that for sure?)

There's a birth in Neath in the July - Sept quarter of 1962 which may be a child of that couple.

However, both surnames are very common, so they could be completely different people.

Why the confusion over the middle name?

You initially stated Arthur John Thomas then you said "Arthur Thomas maybe Arthur john Thomas" but now you say it could be Arthur James. Where is this coming from? Why does it keep changing?

[Stephen -

You've taken the birth dates out of your opening post, but they're still in your later post, yesterday at 20:38. Please remove them from there too. ]

I'm afraid I still don't understand the logistics of this.

Susan, Christine and Russell all had surname Williams, mmn Hawkins.

But they were all born in different places - Herts, Warks, and Neath. 1956, 1959, 1961.
And Arthur Thomas was the father of all of them?

There are a lot of Williams / Hawkins births after 1961 (but none in Neath), and as Beryl clearly moved around quite a bit, it's impossible to know which , if any , of them might be your wife's half-siblings.

If it's relevant, there are also a lot of Thomas / Hawkins births.

I'm still confused by the 'my brother' part. That is Stephen's brother, not Stephen's wife's brother, no? Stephen being the one writing this.

Okay, Stephen edited his first post. It is his wife's brother.

This means it was a brother with the same father, Arthur Thomas, and the same mother as Stephen's wife?

RJW, mother's surname H, birth registered Oct-Nov-Dec 1961, Neath.

It seems to be relevant only for dating the death of Arthur's wife, as the death was known to be 'around the same time' as the brother's birth.

Or is this someone you are also looking for?

If Arthur's wife 'was dying' in hospital at the time Susan's brother was born, she would seem to have been in the hospital then, but did not die until early in the next year?

Stephen, you have put Susan's sister's exact birthdate in two places in this thread. That is not wise, whether or not she has consented (which it seems she has not, since you are trying to reach her through this website). It isn't necessary, and it is personal info that just shouldn't be put on the internet. You can edit those messages to remove the date and leave only the year. Susan's exact birthdate, same thing. Not needed here and not wise.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 12 Sep 2016 22:15

If Arthur's wife was Joan, and if she definitely died in Neath, then that death posted by Rose is the nearest one to your wife's brother's birth date.
(In fact, the only one in Neath 1961-2)

That could mean a death any time in April, May, or June of 1962.
