Find Living Relatives

You will be able to view / download James's death certificate from Scotlandspeople. It will name his parents including his mother's maiden surname if the informant knew the details. It should also give the address and relationship of the informant. When you have James's age and parents names if you post them on this thread someone will find the census records for you.

At the time of the 1911 Census James Agnew would probably be between 18-20

If you do a search of the 1911 census after looking at the death certificate for James Agnew you will find out if James had any siblings.

When we all start looking into our family tree we are all novices but the more research that we undertake ourselves then the better we become.

From a personal point I found out the surnames of people of whom I had no knowledge but are part of my ancestry..

I have Scottish,English & Irish Ancestry and if I had not have done my research then I would not have known about this information

I also found that "skeletons came out of the cupboard" such as illegitimate births,a bigamous marriage,a relative that was transported to Australia as a convict in 1839,

It can be a very interesting journey of discovery so best of luck.

Thank you so much Doug, I am not very good at this but hope the more I get into it the better I will be, I am looking for a bit of both, it would be nice to meet with living relatives and get to know them and their families, I had used Scotlands People but although I paid credits for some pages I can not find them to see and will have to wait until someone finds them for me LOL, been having problems with my laptop and not sure whether it has wrong system (mac ) or something I have done wrong, I
will pop into our local registrars and get a copy,

I had a couple of unused credits left for Scotlands People

There is a death registered in 1956 for a James Agnew married to a Jeanie Thomson in the Stevenston Area.

James would have been born about 1882

This record is available on line.

I then did another search to try to find a death for a Jeanie Agnew (nee Thomson) roughly in the same area.

I found a death registered in 1977 in the Saltcoats Area (close to Stevenston) for the above named person.

This death is not available on line but if you live in Scotland you can go into any local registrars office and pay to obtain a copy.

The death certificates will give you the name of the person who registered the death

A lot now depends on what you are trying to do.

Are you looking into your ancestral past or are you looking to make contact with living relatives?

In any genealogical search you must have a starting point and either work backwards or forwards.

Another useful tool in research is the 1911 Census.
