Don't know if relevant, but from a bit of Googling, it appears that Sidlo is a Polish surname.

Hello Maureen. I am also trying to find some information out about a Sidney Taylor who owned a tailoring business in the around the 1930s to 1960s. My knowledge is that it his parents may have fled with him from Poland as they were Jewish. His business may have been called Sidlore or Sidlaw Skirts in London. The last home address we have for him is Park Ave, Willesden. We think Taylor may have been his surname changed from him original surname. My mother, who has sinced passed, worked for him as a housekeeper from 1932 to 1942. Any information you may have come across since you first posted this or anyone else has discovered would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Also reading between the lines, if you are related to the seamstress, do you know where she lived at the time...ie how far she would have travelled if she went to premises to work? Just to get a fix on area.

I am looking at the 1939 register for Sidney on the grounds that if he was tailor in the 50s he would have been a tailor in 1939. DOB range 1907 plus or minus 5 years, So far four Sidneys ( of the 35 in London) one a tailor's cutter and one a director of gents outfitters, but not in the Shepherds Bush area. ( St Pancras and Hackney). One in Hackney is a shop keeper tailors accessories, one in Stepney ( Taylor formerly Tobovitch) is a "ladies tailor's presser" But he may have lived further out, ( or been in the services so won't show up) or doing war work so won't show as tailor under occupation.

There are 12 results for Middlesex...will check those also.

edit none of the 12 in Middlesex appears to be a tailor... I haven't checked the alternative spelling Sydney though.

reading between the lines ... you are related to him but do not have any details about him or his family other than his approximate age and his occupation in a particular time period ... I think we here are all familiar with the situation when we think a minute :-)

one possibility I've tried a little is to look at the 1911 census for Sidney Taylors in the right age range, in the London area, with parents and siblings whose names 'sound Jewish'

a handicap you might have, though, is the fact that the family name may well have changed after his birth, to the anglicised Taylor from something else, perhaps German or Eastern European

depending on how long his family had been in England before his birth, the switch might already have been made, or it could have been made as late as WWII, for instance

Thanks Malyon and Prickly Holly. I only know that Sidney Taylor was Jewish and had a tailoring business in the 1950s somewhere in the outer London area.

Hi Maureen,

With such a common name.......it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.

There are over 150 births with that name...registered on FreeBMD between 1904 and 1908

Do you have any other information about him?

Names of parents, wife.......children etc?

I am looking for descendants of a Sidney Taylor born around 1904-1908. Sidney was a Jewish Taylor who had a taylor's shop in ? outer London in the early 1950s. He employed a seamstress to make up the suits he sold. His business was probably situated somewhere in East London and maybe the Shepherds Bush area.
