Kay I really am perfectly aware of the 'maiden' name per the birth registration, since I enquired about it and got Rosemary's answer

my understanding had been that both daughters had Glancy as a 'middle' name, which appears to have been incorrect

and the thing is that actually, Rosemary informed us

'Head of house is a j Smith. Now as I was told that my mother was brought up in care and this residence was not a children's home I can only assume that this was foster/adoptive family home. Which would mean she wasn't born Smith.'

that is, Smith is perhaps NOT the 'maiden' name of her mother Margaret, even though it was given as her surname on her daughters' birth registrations ... it may have been a surname she had taken

but indeed, if Margaret (Sr) passed the name Glancy on to only her younger daughter, it is less likely to have been her birth surname

Rosemary, you seem to have local help happening from people like the Salvatation Army with access to records no one else does so I would stick with them and the social services route and hope for something more

I do wonder though, since you have the name 'J Smith' at the address where your mother was living, can you not get more detail than that, say from an electoral roll - full name at least of J Smth and any other adults there?

Margaret born 1962 my sister is registered as Margaret Smith. She does not have Glancy. Salvation army were looking into mother and baby home where I was born as they kept records of young mothers and although lots of detailed records have not survived they did find books with diary entries of mothers and births but my birth was not among them and that has perplexed salvation army. I hope next week to see my records.

Smith was the maiden name,as per birth registrations.

Glancy a family name as used widely in Scotland,

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 24 Dec 2015 11:49

so Rosemary we are back to the very strong possibility that Glancy was her real surname

she gave it to Margaret born 1962 and she gave it to you, as a middle name

it is not likely she would have repeated it for both daughters unless it had a particular significance

you do have your birth certificate, that's correct? so what record is the Salvation Army looking for re your being born? are you referring to the actual address where the certificate says your birth took place? what record would they expect there to be?

you have to understand that we are feeling our way in the dark because the only things we know are what you tell us, and while everyone certainly appreciates and understands the need for privacy, it just leaves us a little perplexed at things

if you are going to be able to access your social services records that seems to be your best hope of getting more info so fingers crossed

Rosemary,

Are you the 1962 Margaret or a seperate born child and both born in Scotland.

1947 Margaret G Smith although was in Perth at some point may not have been born there.

Have found birth cert for Margaret born 1962 and is the right one. Even salvation army have been looking but can't find record of me being born where it says on certificate. Maybe I don't exist. Salvation army are baffled was the word they used. I have found information from library archives of where my mother lived at time of my birth. Head of house is a j Smith. Now as I was told that my mother was brought up in care and this residence was not a children's home I can only assume that this was foster/adoptive family home. Which would mean she wasn't born Smith. Still waiting for access to my records at social services.

On my birth certificate she is Margaret Glancy Smith. And unmarried. So looks like Smith is maiden name and Glancy a middle name. I too have Glancy as a middle name. Will wait to see what comes back on 1949 certificate. I dropped Glancy and took on foster parents surname. A lot is possible.

I guess Rosemary has yet to answer the question of what Margaret Sr's birth surname was

'Margaret Glancy Smith was unmarried at this point.'

yes ... but was her surname Glancy or Smith? :-S

... was Smith the name she was born with, or her name after marriage?

... although since Rosemary has sent for a 1949 birth certificate for surname Smith that may be our answer

If 15 is what has been told by adoptive family and there has been no proof by way of paperwork then I'd not lay too much in it being the exact truth and could find with the correct information from SS will be best.

JoonieCloonie Report 18 Dec 2015 22:58

Hello Rosemary, can you clarify a little?

was Margaret born Margaret Glancy Smith, or was she Margaret Glancy who married Smith?

what is the surname of the Margaret born in 1962?

and would you use the 'Edit' link on your post to remove the younger Margaret's birthdate? the year is all that's needed here, and the exact date is too personal to post on the internet

have you used the Search All Trees facility here?
(upper right of your screen, under 'Search')

there are members with Margaret Glancys born in 1948 and 1949, if that was her birth name, that you could consider

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/tree/results/glancy/margaret

do you know her parents' names?

Scotland's People http://scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
shows 3 Margaret Glancys born 1945-1950
you would have to pay to see the search results list
... and again, that is assuming that Glancy was her birth surname ... which may be wrong as SP shows no Margaret Glancy marriage to Smith

would any of these 1962 Margaret Smiths be possible? --

Looking for Margaret Glancy Smith born around 1947. Lived in Perth scotland. Had a daughter Margaret Smith 1962 looking for her too. Can't find any record of her birth anywhere. Been in touch with family finders and they can't find her either.
