Irish records search and adoption search

Kerry Report 5 Jul 2015 16:50

hi
I am helping a friend and we are both novices, could someone point us in the right direction :-D
She has been advised that her mother who was born in Ireland had a son approx 1956 and she moved to England. Her son was put up for adoption when she was taken ill and he was adopted approx 1960. We have had no luck searching Irish birth records for either child or mother, and not sure how or if it is possible to search adoption records on the basis that the son may still be alive but the mother is now deceased. Any pointers or advice would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks in advance x

If Ireland is anything like the rest of the BI, Adoption Records are closed except to the adoptee.

If you think she took the child to England, then there is the possibility that he was placed for adoption with the social services close to her place of death. If you have her DC, then it would be worth contacting them with the request that a letter is kept with his file.

The following link tells you about the English/Welsh adoption contact register

Googling brings up an Irish equivalent

There are plenty of other results about adoption in Ireland.

Has your friend spoken to all of her surviving relatives? They may have more details such as if the child was taken in by extended family, or placed by an RC Charity.

Have you added the mothers name to your tree, perhaps as a 'sister' to one of your own parents? If the child were to use this site to look for birth family, that's who he'd search for. Similarly search all members trees for her, and send a message if the mothers name is listed.
