So it was Patrick's YOUNGER brother, WIlliam, that made the bottle :)

From the information I have gained from my elders many years ago there were some earlier children born to William and Catherine the following is the list I have,

Catherine Maguire b 1867 Married John Flannagan
Bridget Maguire b 1869 married Dennis Adams and following his death Robert Pierce.

James Maguire b 1873 died in infancy
Margaret Maguire b 1875 married Robert Monks
James Maguire b 1876 (my grandfather) married Sarah Murray

Donal, do you mean Patrick's YOUNGER brother is William?

Patrick's parents married in 1856, and Patrick was born around 1857. According to the headstone erected by Catherine- they also lost two children called William, so I suspect that William was at least a few years younger than Patrick??

Thanks a million to all, you are brilliant and the information in respect of William and Catherine's marriage in St Andrews is interesting, is the St Andrews Westland Row ?.
Patricks older brother William was a Bottle maker and following Patricks death he made a bottle which is etched with details of his death. I have that bottle which is on display in my home and treasured by all the family.

There's quite a few articles on it using different searches- it obviously shook the community.

There's an article from the Freeman's Journal on 16 February 1880 that says two bodies were found and inquests held. The bodies were of Peter Clarke 27 of Fitzwilliam Street, and John Byrne 23 of Thornecastle Street Ringsend (which differs from the address given in above article).

A bit later there was this article
Freeman's Journal 13 March 1880
FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT IN DUBLIN BAY
Five young men from Ringsend in the prime of life and manhood, were lately drowned in Dublin Bay...The threatening roars of the high waves bade them not to take out their boats: but these were hushed by the louder cries of the 34 hungry ones whom they had left at home craving for bread, which they had not. Their aged, feeble parents and their helpless brothers and sisters, who have lost their chief support return grateful thanks for the following donations....

Brilliant find Gritty..I know Donal had looked for ref.to the tragedy in one of the Ringsend locals I think about 2006 but don't know if he got any results....wonder if the Brady's and McGuire's were related ....???

Belfast News-Letter 11 February 1880

BOATING ACCIDENT- SUPPOSED LOSS OF FIVE LIVES:
[BY TELEGRAPH]

Yesterday afternoon a man names Geoghegan reported at the Irishtown Police Station, that the previous morning two boats put out to sea from Ringsend Point containing five men, and it is feared they are all lost, as the boats have been found capsized in Dublin Bay. The names of the missing men are Thomas Geoghehan aged 25, John Byrne 23, James Brady 23, Patrick Mcguire 23, and Peter Clarke 27. They were all unmarried and engaged as watermen. It is believed they are drowned as there was a very heavy sea on during the day.

Freeman's Journal 11 February 1880

....It is feared that all the men are lost as the boats have been found capsized, one in the bay near Poolbeg lighthouse and the other boat on Merrion Strand...The missing men are-
Thomas Geoghehan, aged 25, unmarried, .4 Fair-view, Ringsend
Joseph Brady, aged 23, unmarried, Bridge-Street Ringsend
John Byrne, aged 23, unmarried, same address
Patrick Maguire, aged 23, unmarried, same address
Peter Clarke, aged 27, unmarried, Fitzwilliam-Street Ringsend.
The men were all occupied as watermen.....

Nothing else in the entry.

Joseph (1857 St Andrews) is also listed twice once in Book 16 page 336 and again Book 17 page 346....The details are identical and gives his Godmother as Mary Maloney.. also states D.O.B 1857 but no mothers maiden name etc.

It is possible that Joseph was b late 1857..
Patrick could have been born late '56 Baptised early' 57 so both Baptised in same year...Given that William and Cath. were married St Andrews I would be thinking Joseph was the elder ..a report of the drowning may help clarify Patricks age.

Might one or the other of the forenames been added at baptism?

Thanks for the information Eringobragh however the birth date for their first child, Joseph, raises questions.
From family information I have gained a son of William and Catherine drowned in Dublin Bay along with 4 other fishermen from Ringsend Dublin in February 1880 and the detail of this is that Patrick Maguire was 23 years of age which gives a birth year of 1857. Now I am wondering if their first born had been named Patrick Joseph ??

Donal....Of the two I would be looking at St Marys Star of the Sea although the records don't specify "Star of the Sea".
They do specify "Haddington Road" for those Marriages and Baptisms taken place there.
Their first child Joseph Maguire was Baptised at St.Andrews 1857.

Have you considered contacting both churches to see if they could help you?

Where did the greatgrandparents live in Dublin, and where are the churches situated (try google maps) in relation to those places?

Rambling Rose, your a star for this find however is it possible that you could confirm which of these two St Mary's fit the bill:
St Mary's Star of the Sea Sandymount Dublin
or St Mary's Haddington Road Dublin.

Not seeing a marriage on ancestry at the moment

I am looking for the marriage detail of my greatgrandparents William Maguire and Catherine Byrne both of whom were born in Co Wicklow in the 1830's and lived most of their married life in Dublin.
