If Margaret subsequently got married, they may be under the husbands name on later census - my gran got married in her birth name, but on the census she was recorded under the stepfather's name. Just a thought. |

I assume the birth certificate does not give a previous name for the mother? - so it looks like she was unmarried. Does it give an address, maybe someone with FMP could do a 1871 address look-up to see who was living there |

Hi, I had seen this on the marriage certificate, but it doesn't match the info given by family. It was assumed that he had 'pretended' to have a deceased father, no-one alive to confirm or deny. Still doesn't find him in 1881 and 1891. :-( |

I understand how this works now, thanks. I have been unable to find the birth of John Rourke 1872 Salford. I have the marriage to Margaret Jane Skelton, I have him in the census from 1901 and 1911 but not before. Family story is that he was the illegitimate son of a young Irish woman who came to Salford/Manchester from Ireland. :-) regards Maureen |

Hi Reggie, Many thanks for the information, I do have these details, but thanks for confirming that I am on the right track. I am descended from John 1896 and have met all but two of the surviving siblings. I will try on contact the grandchildren of the original children. :-) regards Maureen |
