This is the most obvious John Gilbert Wedgewood:

John Gilbert Wedgewood:
Birth Date: 18 May 1934
Date of Registration: Aug 2006
Age at Death: 72
Registration District: Oldham
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: -1
Page: -1
Register Number: OB44B
District and Subdistrict: 007/1B
Entry number: 158

John G Wedgewood
Spouse Surname: Cox (Frances E)
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1955
Registration District: Middleton
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume Number: 10e
Page Number: 868

John Gilbert's probable parents' marriage:
Marriages Sep 1926
Wedgewood Gilbert Winterbottom Oldham 8d 2172
Winterbottom Hilda Wedgewood Oldham 8d 2172

John Gilbert Wedgewood probably had 2 daughters from his marriage to Frances Cox, Janet and Christine. Janet would appear to be a member on here.

I guess you're local, as you've referred to the archives. A visit to check out your fathers address on the electoral rolls should show if there was anyone else of voting age living there - could be worth checking?

Or, look at tracing whether he left a will (it's too recent to be online), but you can apply for a search - I think it costs £6.

Thanks for mail, will pursue the wedgewood link .Getting a little closer! The local archives I refer to are in Caernarfon,N.Wales so not got anything in there for Oldham,M./C. I don't think. No written material any way.
Have got a marriage for John Holroyd to Barbara E Henderson,in 1958, 10f 585.
Maybe my father?

Flip Report 17 Nov 2013 06:59

According to lancashirebmd that marriage was at Rochdale, The good shepherd, between Jack Holroyd and Barbara Eveline Henderson. This would look like her death:

Barbara Evelyn Holroyd
Birth Date: 1 Dec 1936
Date of Registration: Feb 1995
Age at Death: 58
Registration District: Manchester
Inferred County: Lancashire
Register Number: H48B
District and Subdistrict: 0061H
Entry number: 100

So considerably younger that your father. You would only know by accessing the parish record, or getting a copy of the marriage certificate.

You could try contacting the Oldham records office to see if they would do an electoral lookup for you. Contact details on here:

Don't think that marriage valid.Barbara Evelyn would have been alive when father died so I am thinking she would have been the informant .Am I wrong?

John Gilbert Wedgewood died in 2006 but I don't see a death for his wife and I would expect his children are still living so I wonder about the propriety of posting their personal information here when they are probably unrelated in any event and are not aware they and their family are being discussed on the internet ..............

Have you considered the marriage in 1948 in Manchester? You can find the spouse's name by searching for the marriage at freebmd
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
unfortunately the bride's name is not distinctive.

there were three children born to that marriage

When you specify post-1947, was there a divorce that drew that line?

Does the death certificate state the relationship of the informant to the deceased?

Sticks

Sticks Report 18 Nov 2013 11:07

Fair point that the Wedgewood family would perhaps not welcome intrusion from a stranger but they seem to be the only link to my father at the moment. John Gilbert may only have been a good friend but his family may know about my fathers history.Whether or not he remarried, had more children ?
I certainly do not want to upset any body so will see what else developes in the meanwhile. Should I have to abandon Wedgewood I will.

Sticks Report 18 Nov 2013 11:35

As far has I am aware;fairly sure ,Mother did not divorce. Think father may have done so after the then statutory 7yr wait but evidence anecdotal so that makes any divorce at least 1954, roughly. The 1947 figure is when Mother parted company with father.
My 3 year old infant brain remembers a very, very cold awful winter which would have been 46-47 I think. Hazy memory!
The informant is unknown to me,perhaps a good friend, even a good neighbour and that is why I don't want to tread too heavily at the moment. Maybe a different direction will give the same result?

(Sticks, my point wasn't that you shouldn't contact them, it was that the personal info of living people who may not even be related to your inquiry in any way should probably not be posted up here where it is visible to the world and their brother. :-) I simply would not want my parents' marriage info and my name and family info posted on the internet without me knowing or agreeing, and I think most of us would feel the same way, that's why it's best to send people information like that privately. I just keep seeing a lot of that being done here and I am more used to family history websites that have stricter rules about privacy protection I guess........)

Even in the 1950s it was not unheard of for someone to wander off and marry again after a while, without benefit of divorce, so it is worth considering the possibility, as you have been doing!

Hi David/Sticks - change of name??

I agree with JC, and would not like to post up too many details for Mr Wedgewood or his family - as they look to be unconnected. However if they are unrelated i don't see what harm there would be in trying to trace them to see if they have any info on your fathers life.

Really think your best bet at the moment would be to get some ER checks on your father's address in 1986 and before - see who, if anyone, was living with him. And check out for a possible will. This website tells you how, and contains the application form - it costs £6 for a search and copy of will if they locate one.

http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills

Also, spend some time on researching his siblings families - see if you can locate some cousins who may be able to shed some light.
