There are quite a few on the Electoral registers, do you know if he would be living with anyone?

You can do a free search by googling his name followed by 192.com

If he is still in Edinburgh, there are 22 results on 192.com (pay to view) and 2 with a partial address. Those 2 plus a few more are on http://www.thephonebook.bt.com
The phone book is free and gives the full address.

No idea what post code Groat Hill has so am unsure if any of them are relevant

There are over 200 premium results on 192.com (on line ER) for a James Forbes. That number does not include those who have opted out of the public version of the ER. Some have middle names, other's don't.

When was contact lost? Is he likely to still be alive in the natural order of things?

Unless your friend can give a few more details as suggested above, the best that can happen is that one day he or a relative will stumble upon this thread. Sorry
