No sorry my ancestors were not Orchards.

It was just something that interested me.....If my dad had his DNA tested with all the other males with his surname, he is the only one decended from his grandfather, the others do not know who their one was.

It was only through doing my tree that I found this out, I doubt whether it was common knowledge as my gt uncle may not have had to ever produce a birth cert

Hi Jax. Thank you for responding. You are correct. The same Y-DNA male markers are transferred from father to son and illigitamate children and girls sadly end the line. Were your grandfathers parents or ancestors Orchards from Yate/ OldSodbury?

I dont quite understand this DNA testing business.

My paternal surname is quite unusual, in the 21 years between my dads birth and mine there were only 8 other births with that name all being cousins of my father ect.

My grandfather had three brothers, two did'nt have children the otherone had a few who went on to produce quite a few male offspring.

My question is :- My grandfathers brother was the eldest, and it turns out he was illigitamate, although he may not have known that...so would DNA testing on his decendants be a waste of time? Does this line stop at my dad because he only had girls?

The amazing thing about genealogy is that the brick walls are opened when and where one least expects it and one must never accept that it is ....a dead end.
New information is continuously being scanned and placed on the internet and there is always new living generations who when they get older want to learn more about their ancestors. In the rat race we live while we are young we are all too busy making a living and only once we retire do we start wondering where do we come from. If only we had asked more questions and made notes when we were youngsters growing up. Regards Evan

I am trying to make contact with living males with surname ORCHARD whose ancestors were from Yate and Old Sodbury. I am almost certain my Great-Grandfather James Orchard is the James Orchard baptised 27 March 1803, Old Sodsbury son of James Orchard 1763 Yate/1851 Old Sodbury and Hannah Carter.
I want to sponsor a Y-DNA of a living male Orchard from that family to confirm if my South African Orchards ancestors were not related. All male descendants with the same family surname have the same DNA markers accross many generations. My James Orchard married in Cape Town in 1832 and indicated his previous residence was Bristol.
