Thanks Jan, she has done that. My friend was herself adopted as a baby. Their poor mother, having to give up two children. She did have other children and my friend has, traced one of these, her half sister. She is enjoying her new found family. It was due to this half sister that she learned of the existence of a full blood brother. |

Now it makes sense Margaret. It's the same in England/Wales, the information is confidential. |

I see I've written that my friend is her brother. That should read, my friend is his sister. |

My friend has registered and been in contact with Birthlink. They applied to the local authority in the area he was adopted. After months of waiting, the local authority has now said that, although they have the information she requires on file, they are under no legal obligation to release the details. A devastating blow to my friend. As "David" hasn't registered his interest with Birthlink, they cannot help her further. She has asked the local authority if they can do a search and inform him of her wish to make contact, but this has been denied her. If there was a way she could learn of his adopted name, she would do all the research herself. |

Birthlink are the official body, they have a register, that she should use. |

This makes no sense though - surely birth names are used for adoption contacts? Completely pointless using adoptive name as relatives won't know what it is!! |

My friend is his brother, she's only recently discovered that David is her full blood brother. I'm trying to help her in her search. Birthlink haven't been able to helpas she only has his birth name, which is certain to have been changed. I posted this in the hope that someone may know of his background. |

Are you a relative? You might consider registering on the adoption contact register for Scotland: |

I am searching for David Bertram who was born in Perth, Scotland and adopted as a child. He is around 53 years old now. He will no doubt have been given a different name by his adoptive parents. |
