Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 23 Aug 2012 20:52

The name RESLAND does not feature in any birth, marriage or death searches on freebmd. I therefore think this is likely to be a child of a PRESLAND mother.

Sometimes the GRO index is wrong.
My own sister and I are shown with diffeent spellings for our mother's maiden name.

Of the listed marriages, the Brighton one is the most likely going by it's proximity to Betty's birth area compared with the others and now the added information that a sibling was born in Brighton area gives weight to that being the marriage cert. that I'd go for .

More thanks for more suggestions. Firstly, Betty's brother. How did I miss that one? The Gladys born in Brighton, on the original entry the mother is shown as Resland, I don't think it was a spelling mistake but I may be wrong. I have only found two deaths for a Sydney J Spencer to 1984 and one of them looks promising enough to send for the death cert. The death was registered in Cuckfield, W.Sussex. There is a death for a Edith M Spencer of the right age registered in Brighton, which is quite near Cuckfield, but I will wait for Sydney's cert to arrive first. Once again, thanks for all your help and suggestions

What about Betty's brother born 1923

How does a GLADYS J Spencer born 1921 BRIGHTON fit in the family tree

Just a bit more...Sydney and his first wife may have had a daughter. Edith nee Taylor died in Worksop in 1918. There is a birth of a Nellie Spencer in Worksop in Sept qtr 1917, mother's maiden name Taylor. Bob (clutching at straws)

By the way, I know where they all were in the 1911 census, and I have the ancestors back to the late 1600s, that was the easy part. Bob

It is a very long story. Sydney was one of eight siblings. He was a widower when he married Edith Presland, his previous wife was Edith R Taylor who died in 1918. His sister Amy gave birth to three eligitimate children, one of whom was my M-in-L. The other two died without issue. His sister Grace married Leonard Homewood in 1936 aged 40. Apart from those, the line just seems to have disappeared. My wife has no known relatives from that side of the family. We don't even know what happened to Amy, as her daughter (also Grace) was given up for adoption as a baby. Bob

Thanks for the suggestions. I found all the possible marriages on Free BMD, but there are too many to start sending for certificates. My wife's Spencer family are extremely elusive!!! Bob

I am looking for Betty A Spencer, born 1927 in Sevenoaks district. Her parents were Sydney John Spencer and Edith Presland. She would have been the cousin of my late Mother-in-Law, Grace Spencer. Bob Waight
