Hi Deirdre
YES I have received this... a mere how many years late.
I am still researching and on all sides, though i have felt that i am neglecting my mother's lineage. You may well have my contact details as i remain living with family at same address as for last 36 years. I am 73 now so i had best hurry up. :-)
Maybe an early step forward might be swapping contact information such as we have it, so future years researchers can get going quicker :-)
Best wishes

Dear David,
I don’t know if you will pick this up after so many years! I think we shared family trees on another site as I remember your name but I don’t recall seeing this message. I am so sorry. I’d love to be in touch!
By chance some years back I found out that a man I’d been singing with, sharing car journeys, was the great grandson of RW Forsyth! So he, you and I would be distant cousins. My great grandfather was John, brother of RW and of your great grandfather James.
Can you please let me know if you receive this?
Many thanks, Deirdre

Hi Deirdre
RW Forsyth is the brother of one of my great grandfathers, James Forsyth. Maybe some of my info will be of use to you.
Feel free to get in touch.
Best wishes
David

The premises of R W Forsyth, ladies' and gents' outfitters in Renfield Street, pictured in 1963.

The original R W Forsyth set up in business as hosier, glover and shirtmaker at 5-7 Renfield Street in 1872. The business prospered, leading to expansion to the corner of Gordon Street in 1897. The new building, on six floors, was "heated by hot water pipes, and two gas engines of 32 hp each, providing an electric light installation for illuminating purposes." The staircase was particulary admired, sweeping upwards centrally from each floor with handsomely carved balustrades. Further expansion followed, with the opening of a large store on a prime site on Princes Street in Edinburgh in 1907. The business remained in the family, in the hands of the founder's son Graham and grandson Derek.

Forsyth's had a strong reputation for quality clothing and fashions, and also succeeded in specialist areas such as sports equipment and school outfitting. The store closed in 1983, when the firm moved to premises formerly occupied by the Trerons department store in Sauchiehall Street.

How did you do that??? thank you so very much! I had the information about Georgina's parents and sibs from census material (scotlandspeople) but hadn't managed to find anything about John's siblings. I seriously don't know how you discovered all of that but I am so grateful. Now I will be able to take this further and perhaps trace a living relative. It's great to see the photo too. You are kind!
Best wishes, Deirdre

You could use Scotlandspeople to work forward from her siblings to find living relatives. Do you have marriages, children and deaths for all her siblings?

Not what you were asking for but here is a picture of R. W. Forsyth. Presumably Georgina was a cousin of his?

My grandmother was Georgina Forsyth (1868-1943), married to Walter MacGregor. I would dearly love to see a photo of her as she died before I was born and wondered if anyone in the wider family might have one. She came from a large family and was related to R.W.Forsyth. Her father was John Forsyth (1833-1882), master clothier, and mother, Christina Frier (1839-1878). The family lived in Tantallon Place, Edinburgh. Georgina had six siblings......surely someone out there is descended from one of them?? i am ever hopeful.
