As someone whose mum was also abandon at a few weeks old i'll tell what i found.
You say the baby was abandoned at a few days old and the mother was
arrested and served 6months in prison for this crime. Well my mums mum was also known but not charged with any crime (i wonder if she was?). Any way my mums birth wasn't registered till almost 2and half years after her birth, there is a written amendment at the end of the birth records for her actual birth year referring to the late entry. We think this was due to some sort of error by the authorities assuming she had already been registered. So widen your search for the birth record as that entry was made by a senior registrar on behalf of the adoption agency. Because even though the authorities say my nan abandon her she had actually left her with a neighbour but was longer than she thought and the neighbour contacted the authorities. As nan didn't want her adopted she run them a merry dance before finally signing the adoption form some 8 yrs later.Mums adoption records are more like a comedy than an official document.

I think you need to contact/visit Portsmouth library and find the story of an abandoned baby and look for Joyce's criminal records. See what name she was going under at the time.

Allen, I think you need to start getting birth certs. You really need to confirm or discount these births. Not sure there is any other way.

If she were born in 1930/1931 and died in the 80s, there are no deaths that fit under any of those surnames.

Joyce died in the 80s we think in county durham with the name of walker.

But now thinking she was with Bill or Bob Hopkins in Portsmouth so this baby girl might have the name Hopkins but being abandoned only a few days old in 1954 she must have been adopted.

Whether she remarried or not her maiden name should stay the same...but it can happen that mothers give the wrong name

Sorry its me.My Husbands mother Joyce Hirst married a Allen Greenwood in Jan 1949 my husband also Allen was born in Feb 49 she then left them, We found out she met someone call Hopkins and Walker so i cannot find a female with the name Greenwood but have found one for Hopkins so Joyce could have married or changed her name.My husband never knew who his father was or that his mother married him until 4 years ago as in those day it was a big secret

Rambling Report 10 May 2012 20:24

Just to go back a minute, there is a Jane Greenwood registered 1953, but the mother's maiden name is Perry, though there doesn't seem to be a Greenwood/Perry marriage in Portsmouth to match up ( though there was one elsewhere so can't be discounted that that particular couple. moved).

EDIT sorry I had missed a bit of what you had posted, that the child was only a few days old when left...so that would eliminate the Jane born 1953.

jax Report 10 May 2012 20:10

If her maiden name was Hirst, why say it was Hopkins? but it would not be the first time this sort of thing has happened.

You will have to purchase the cert to see if the mother had the same first name

If you check the Portsmouth area births for girls born with mother's maiden name HIRST, as suggested by brummiejan, you will find a name that matches to a name on a GR member's tree.
Look for the child's name in SEARCH TREES and contact the tree holder to hopefully share information.

Rather than try contacting a local paper, you need to view newspapers of the time. You would need to view these at the local archives, normally at the main library for the area.
There 4 births in Portsmouth after 1949 with MMN Hirst, though none with surname Greenwood. 3 are girls, born 1957 & 1960. I wonder if there is any chance she was using another surname at this time?
