Find Living Relatives

Can anyone assist in my search for a long lost brother? Attila Desics born 1959, lived in Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. Son of Imre Desics a.k.a. Jimmy Desics and Doreen Greenwood. I understand that the late Doreen later remarried a Lawrence Cassidy in the late 60's.

Attila is the last piece of the jigsaw. He is the eldest of 5 children. I have traced a sister and 2 other brothers, but all avenues of enquiry in my search for Attila have dried up. If anyone knows of his whereabouts or that of any of his extended family, please get in touch.

Well, that's an unusual name isn't it! There can only be one in the UK I am guessing.

I can see nothing on Ancestry or 192.com. Have you contact with Doreen at all? This might be the route you have to take.

You are right about the marriage by the way.

It might be co-incidence, but if you check 192.com there is a (very young) Lawrence Cassidy with Greenwoods in the same household 2009. Might be worth pursuing of all else fails.

Many thanks for your kind support. It is my understanding that Doreen passed away during the 70's and my brother stayed with his step father Lawrence Cassidy. I can't find any likely Cassidy's listed locally in the phone books. (Halifax and surrounding area) I don't know if Lawrence is still living or not.

All I can find is Attila I Desics listed on an electoral role in Dover, but I don't know how old the info is and I can't access any more detailed information. Would my local reference be able to assist in obtaining this information do you think?

Attila's date of birth is 31/12/58 and he was registered at Todmorden 10/02/59 I have his birth certificate and marriage certificate of our father and Doreen Greenwood, but no details of their divorce and Doreen's subsequent marriage to Lawrence.

Where did you find that electoral register reference?

Yes thanks you sent me details of the marriage entry... I'm shocked to see how soon after marrying that she died. I've no idea whether Lawrence is still living and I'm guessing he'd be in his 70's at least.

Through Ancestry.co.uk I've traced Attila to Dover on the electoral role, but I don't know how old the record is. There is no telephone listing. My other long lost sibling who I found 2 years ago (younger than me and also a Desics) is a Vicar and even with the resources open to him he cannot find Attila, which makes us wonder if he's left the country or changed his name.

I would be inclined to get the death cert myself and see who the informant is. It would also give you an address to work with.

There is a death of an Attila Imre but can't be yours in view of birth date? I am assuming Imre is his middle name? I feel I should put it anyway as the name is so unusual.

Yes Imre is his middle name, but the one you've found is not the one I'm seeking. I'm shocked that there is another as the name is so unusual for the UK.

Death cert may be an option, but I fear the information of the informant may be too old to be of any use. Last resort though I suppose...

Do not despair! I am fond of telling people that I found my 2nd cousins in just this way, via a 1971 death cert. The cert should give you both the address of the deceased and the informant. In my case I did a street search on Friends Reunited and found various people who had lived there in the 70's - including a relative! I was lucky but it gives the possibility of contacting neighbours who often have useful information.

The other option is to find out more about Lawrence by getting the marriage cert - he might have other children from a previous marriage for example.

Might be worth getting Lawrence and Doreen's marriage cert to get more details of Lawrence.

Right people...

The 'good' news is it looks like I've found Attila at the Dover address, but I'm making contact through an intermediary. The ball is as they say in his court now, so only time will tell if he wants reuniting with 3 brothers and a sister, but I'll let you all know if we have a positive outcome.
