Find Living Relatives

Am looking for my husbands half sister born in 1945/6 father on her birth cert would be Hill, she was born either in cheltenham or islington no name for her mother at all , is it you? please contact me, we would so much love to meet you

They were never married as he was married to my husbands mother

In that case, I'm afraid that the chance of the father being named on the birth cert is virtually zero.

No because the babies mother didnt know that he was married with a family and they planned there wedding but my husbands father confessed to being married at the last moment and he supported the child and her mother for years with my husbands mother knowing about it all , my mother-in-law an father-in-law are both deceased by the way
as far as the childs mother knew he was going to marry her but he led a double life so the childs name would be hill

So he was present when the birth was registered?

He would have had to be, as they weren't married.................unless the mother lied and said that she was married when registering the birth

Have you tried searching on here to see if anyone has your husband's father in their tree?

I didn't say anything about her being married 'before'...........only that she could have lied about being married to the father of her child.

BUT.................births for that era are mostly on freebmd............you could try doing a search, although I don't hold out much hope that you'll gain anything by so doing.

Carol, what Flick is saying is

a child could be registered in the father's surname

only if

the parents were married

the parents were not married but the father was present and consented

the parents were not married but the mother said she was married and used the father's surname


it really isn't possible to know whether the father was present at the registration ... but one thing to do is look for births at the right time in the right place that were registered in two surnames

you would do this by finding births with the surname Hill and then clicking to look at all births on the same page

if you find for example

Mary Jane Hill
and
Mary Jane Brown

on the same page and both have mother Brown then this would be a child of unmarried parents whose father's surname was Hill and her mother was Brown

I have found one possibility in Cheltenham, it's a little more complicated than what I described there so I will send you the info privately

I checked all female Hill births in Cheltenham 1945-46
haven't looked at Islington yet

looking at 1945 for Islington so far there is one you can probably rule out

say her name is

Pauline E Smith

she is also registered as

Pauline E Brown

and the mother's surname is shown as Jones for both

This means that the mother was Jones married to Smith but had a child with Brown (or vice versa)

so if you are certain that your half-sister's mother was not married, this would not be her

checked through Islington 1946 and the only other Hill / XXXX birth is where the mother was the Hill
