Find Living Relatives

Hello, I am looking for help finding information on Jean Emma Roberts. She was born on July 11, 1961 I believe in Devon. She is my mother and I was adopted when I was very small. Initially I am only hoping to discover a few details, if she ever married, or possibly if she had any other children later in her life.

I do not really know where to begin, and someone recommended this place as full of lovely helpful people.

The first thing usually would be to locate her birth, but I have to say I am struggling with this. Have you any other info whatsoever?

Hi Jan, thank you for replying.

Unfortunately I don't know very much at all, I think her mother was also named Jean, and my original birth certificate gives an address in Barnstaple.

Mothers place of birth is Ilfracombe, Devon.

As you have an address, have you tried seeing who else was living there on the electoral register? (Only adults of voting age, obviously).
This has to be done in person, or by a member of staff. Records are normally kept at the nearest main library.

The other easy thing to do is check the address on Friends Reunited to see if anyone is registered there - including neighbours. This would be relatively recent so worth a try, someone might know something.

Have you registered yourself on the national adoption register? And contacted NORCAP for advice?

I haven't tried the library, thats good thinking. I can stop by there tomorrow and have a look.

Yes to the contact register, but no to NORCAP at the moment. I did contact them for advise some months ago. I only very recently accessed my adoption records, and SS believe there must be more documentation somewhere, it just hasn't turned up yet!

as no birth can be found under the name given, it is very possible that Jean herself was ALSO adopted.
