review of Toby's Room

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main charcter, Elinor, is obsessed with discovering what happened to her brother, Toby, who was listed as 'Missing, Believed Killed, in 1917. She is so intent in her pursuit that everything and everyone else in her life is affected by her quest. I found myself reading faster and faster as the truth about Toby was finally revealed.

When the author takes us into the trenches her descriptions are so vivid that it is sometimes hard to read. I also found it fascinating to learn about the artisits who helped surgeons during the reconstructing of the faces of severely injured soldiers. This was something I knew nothing about.

I was somewhat confused about a character who suddenly appeared as a love interest to Elinor with no background as to how they had met, however, I believe Ms Barker has saved this for another book.

I look forward to reading that book and also to investigate others by this author.

I recommend Toby's Room to all those readers who have an interest in WW1.
