Not seen any chaffinches here yet jane, we do usually get a few in the winter but they tend to ground feed what the other birds have dropped. We are still getting blue, coal and great tits and Goldfinches but not so many today, it has been very dull and wet all day. We have seen no sun for a week now.

Jane Report 5 Nov 2015 16:03

Mucky day here :-S.I have had the lights on since lunch time as it is so dark.
Not a lot of activity here on the bird front. But there do seem to be a fair number of Chaffinches coming to the window feeder right now :-)

Vera, it's not good to hear the thud on the windowpane. I cringe and hold my breath as I go ouside to see if there is a poor dead bird on the floor. This happened recently but thankfully nothing visible for me to have to be brave and deal with!

A little brighter here this morning but rain is forecast for the next three days. Just washed out the two bird baths and cleaned /refilled the ground and window feeders
so we will wait and see who comes a-calling here today.

Jane Report 4 Nov 2015 17:59

Oh I hate that 'thump' on the window and then you see the 'Angel Wing' pattern.
it is nearly always pigeons ,but I have never once found a body. The little birds that fly into the windows often break their neck. The lucky ones just stun themselves and eventually recover and fly off.

The Green Woodpecker has been having a field day today on the lawn.He has a really Bright Red Head.Redder than I have seen.No sign of the Gt Spotted Wood pecker for a couple of days.I hope it comes back .They usually manage to find the window feeder :-D
Filthy day again here. Not foggy but just dark ,dismal and rainy.I just had a wet and soggy Thomas come in with half a hedge stuck in his coat :-S.Lord knows where he has been.

that always amazes me Vera I assume they make more noise because of the sound through the glass. glad there were no dead bodies anyway. We have had loads of blue tits, great tits and two coal tits, plus a starling on the coconut and OH said there was a blackbird in this morning. I think it is because we have put out new, fresh seed, the old stuff in a large bag seemed to be getting stale. We won't buy such a large bag next time, good job it was on special offer when we bought it. Found a new type this morning, ground up peanuts, put it in a feeder and the blue tits love it. BY peckish £3.99 a medium sized bag (can't remember what weight it was.)

Murky and damp early morning and evening but the middle of the day has been lovely for the last 3 or 4 days. Today we were doing an errand for someone which involved an hour's drive each way and it was so lovely that we chose to go the longer scenic route through the villages rather than on the main A roads. The trees looked wonderful in the sun and even where the leaves were all on the ground the colours were superb.

When we got back we were in our lounge with a cup of tea when there was such a loud bang that I jumped and slurped my tea over the coffee table. When we looked there was the perfect outline of a large bird, possibly a pigeon, on the patio door. OH went outside expecting to find a dead, or at least a stunned bird, but there wasn't a sign of a bird in the garden. How could anything hit a glass door with that amount of force and then immediately fly away?

Lucky you Jane. We have had quite thick fog for last 3 days. No fog today but very damp here. Have washing on the clothesline which are just hanging, so they will need to go in the dryer very soon.

A few usual birds but not much activity to be honest.

We were back in our summer clothes yesterday Ann :-D I even had my flip flops on LOL
My Window feeder still has food in tonight which is very unusual,so I don't think even the birds have out and about much today :-S

Still very foggy here :-( :-(

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 1 Nov 2015 15:09

Very misty here this morning but the sun came out and it cleared before midday. The birds seem to have a rota for visiting our garden and today is clearly starling day. Loads of them around and they very quickly managed to demolish several fat balls.

Other than the starlings we have only seen a couple of sparrows and a couple of robins.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 1 Nov 2015 13:27

foggy here today and the birds were in a feeding frenzy this morning. the blue tits have discovered the coconut I put out and were squabbling over that, the coal tits couldn't deccide whether to eat the sunflower seed or the niger seed so were taking turns at both, meanwhile the single goldfinch plodded steadily on enjoying the niger seeds. Down the end of the garden a robin was busy and on the sunflower seeds were several Great tits, some quite small so probably this years.

AnninGlos Report 29 Oct 2015 13:01

Not that many birds today, they don't seem to come when it is damp and dull like it is today. However, we seem to have two regular coal tits, as well as Great Tits and Blue tits, and up to three Goldfinches. Haven't seen our frog lately.

kandj Report 29 Oct 2015 12:18

Nothing very interesting here, just the usual birds who eat and fly off, but it is nice to read about the antics from Jane and Vera. I hope Humphrey frog shows up soon.

Jane

Jane Report 28 Oct 2015 18:50

They are funny aren't they Vera.I too have seen them on our Woodshed .Upside down, sideways ,all ways to get to the insects. They don't give up.So it must be quite a feast :-D

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 28 Oct 2015 13:46

We've just been laughing at the antics of a blue tit. He's obviously finding that the weather has brought out some insects and there must be a little cache of them on our fence. He's been hanging at the most extraordinary angles trying to get his beak into a spot by a fence post. Every so often he flew on to a nearby blueberry bush for a rest, then back to the fence for another go.

At the moment there are around 8 blackbirds in the garden throwing leaves, grit and earth everywhere, and there were a pair of robins earlier.

We haven't seen our frogs for a while. In one week a while ago we saw Humphrey or a very similar frog, one a little smaller and a baby one but they all seem to have gone walkabout :-(

Loving your Avatar Ann.

How did you lose the lovely baby photo Maryanna? Not too long now to another grandchild for you...... I hope that your daughter is keeping well right now?

Vera, no frogs near here. I hope that Humphrey makes an appearance soon.

No ladybirds here Jane. In fact we haven't seen any for a very long time, so they must have all made their way over to you (or hiding in Jame's bedroom??).
