I too have a painful left thumb, although not constantly.

Jane, maybe the moorhens have gone back to a regular nesting site somewhere. <3 :-)

Jane Report 28 Mar 2015 19:06

Ann ,that is what I am hoping.Just hope they are safe :-D.The one on it's own seems to be getting slightly less jittery when it sees me.It knows I have food :-D :-D

Yes the thumb pain is horrible.Especailly when you get the sudden stabbing shooting pain. :-S.My big toe is just the same :-|
We have been to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time this afternoon at the theatre..It was just brilliant :-D :-D

Pleased your remaining moorhen now thinks you are its mummy. :-)

Maryanna Report 30 Mar 2015 11:25

Jane, glad you enjoyed the Curious Incident, I read it about five years ago.

Having worked with children with Autism and Aspergers for twenty years I found some of it quite amusing.

I have been hearing a Green Woodpecker " yaffling" in the woods across the road for a few days. This morning I wad looking out of the window and spotted a a Great Tit so I thought I would take a photo. It wasn't until I had the camera pointed at it that I realised there was also a Spotted Woodpecker the other side of the feeder.

I wasn't expecting one if those, a green one, yes.

Needless to say just as I was about to press the button, next doors kids came screaming outside and there hadn't been a bird, except Fatty Pigeon, in the garden since.

I can see a day of looking out of the window ahead of me. Except for when I go to collect my new glasses later this afternoon. Might be able to see them in future.

I was watching a big Wood Pidgeon earlier. It was stood on the path with a massive twig in it's beak looking up at the conifers(where the nest must be).It must have been thinking "How the heck am I going to get this in there" lol It looked like he had one one those long poles that tight rope walkers hold to keep their balance :-D :-D
No camera at hand :-S
Then a little later I saw it give a good shake of its feathers. The dust that came out was amazing.'twas like massive cloud :-S :-S....I have not seen that before.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 1 Apr 2015 17:14

Wonder how big their nest is, theya re such huge birds I wonder how they get 'lift off'! No not seen them shake themselfs, maybe it is dusty in the nest :-D

Jane

Jane Report 1 Apr 2015 20:15

LOL Ann Maybe I will see it with a sweeping brush :-D...He has being doing 'naughties' with his OH on the Summerhouse roof.It was quite funny really because after they did a lot of the smoochy biz the act was over so fast the poor female looked around as to say what the heck happened there lol

Maryanna Report 2 Apr 2015 11:19

We have got a lot of Wood Pigeon action going on here as well.

Since the apple tree went we have had several of them in the garden, up to seven or eight sometimes at a go.

There is one pair that have built a nest in the same tree and under the Magpies mansion, it can only end in tears, too easy for the Magpies to nip downstairs for a snack.

The other pair are in the Holly bush next door. Now, this already seems to be home to anything that doesn't live in the Blackthorn and as the two trees grow they get more and more entwined.

The building if this nest is all consuming, they are constantly in and out of the Holly. They seem to be getting bits of twig from next door and as you say, Jane, they look like trapeze artists at the circus.

They come flying in from the left, land on the stump of the apple tree, then wobble about a bit, then have to turn round 180 degrees, balancing their twig, then launch themselves off the stump and crash land with a huge flapping of wings,in the Holly.

They are doing this at a rate of about once every two minutes, every time I look out of the window there is a great fat pigeon in front of me.

New glasses are fine and I haven't had any problems adjusting to the varifocals, I just wonder if I should be able to see close up things clearer, I can read ok but I still find myself peering over the top to file a nail or look at my camera screen. There is no way I would be able to look through the view finder. Will give it a week or so and may then pop back and have a word.

AnninGlos Report 2 Apr 2015 12:38

Maryanna, are these your first varifocals. You do need to lift your head a bit at first to look through the lower part of the lens. I have been wearing them for many years but do have a bit of a problem with the viewfinder on the small camera. (because the view finder itself is not very big.)

Maryanna

Maryanna Report 2 Apr 2015 14:48

Hi, Ann, yes they are my first varifocals. I have got the head moving bit OK and don't seem to have a problem with the fuzzy bit in the middle or at the sides. I did go for the lenses with the minimum peripheral fuzziness as well and as my prescription is so strong I have to have the extra thin lenses, hence the £400 price tag on a frame that only cost £100 !!!

I just wonder if the reading part is strong enough, I wouldn't be able to do any fine sewing with them, I even had a job painting my nails.although it was clearer than when I tried to look through the top part of the lens !!!!

Will persevere, at least I am on holiday and don't have any notes to write up.

Waiting for youngest son to come back from work then all down to Somerset for ten days to join up with the others before I go back to work.

Try looking at a printed page and slightly move your glasses up (holding them) to see if the magnification chhanges for the better. Could you read the print when the optician checked you when fitting the new glasses.

Jane

Jane Report 2 Apr 2015 17:45

I had to have my Varifocals altered .They were a tad off.I have had them about a year now and am getting used to bobbing my head up and down lol.Sometimes though especially when walking I do feel a bit woozy :-S.I had one pair with reactalight (if that is right) so they go darker in brighter light.

I think I might have just heard a Nightingale again :-D..The Wood Pidgeons are still doing naughties on the Summerhouse Roof. They have no shame LOL
Loved your comment Ann ;-)

I do hope that Kandj's OH is ok .It just seems one thing after another for them.
Thinking of you Kandj <3

SuffolkVera Report 3 Apr 2015 11:52

The starlings are out in force this morning. The garden seems to be full of them, together with four collared doves and two very fat pigeons. I think they are keeping the smaller birds away. I can hear them twittering but they are not coming into the garden. Two brave little dunnocks did land on the grass under the feeder but a couple of starlings flapped their wings at them and they flew away. I think I'll invest in a shotgun. Anyone for starling pie? :-D

Are you getting used to your varifocals yet Maryanna? I have strange eyes, one long sighted and the other very, very short sighted yet I had no problems with varifocals. OH couldn't get on with them at all and had to go back to having separate glasses for reading and distance. Horses for courses I suppose.

I hope Kandj's OH is improving and we see her back on the boards again soon

Jane

Jane Report 3 Apr 2015 15:34

I think I might just pass on Starling Pie thanks Vera :-D....Enjoy :-D
Isn't it strange that we have no starlings at all in the garden.I dod see lots of flocks of small birds which I think are Starlings though.

Last night as it was dusk I could hear Owls.So I went to the back door to have a listen and just as I stepped outside an Owl took off from the dead tree trunk(probably 25ft high) just maybe 30 feet away from where I was standing. It flew across the garden into a big Fir tree.I don't know what kind of owl it was.

Thinking of Kandj and OH. <3

AnninGlos Report 3 Apr 2015 16:25

We seem to have starlings back again and we have a pair of blackbirds who feed and bathe in the garden. we also think Great tits are nesting in the sparrow box. Stills eeing Goldfinches but very few sparrows and blue tits.

I do envy you your owl Jane.

No don't fancy starling pie thanks Vera.

Hope Kandj looks in sometimes. We are all thonking of you Kandj

Jane

Jane Report 3 Apr 2015 19:20

It is getting darker now .I am going to keep my eyes open in the hope of seeing the Owl if it should be here again.OH says he often sees an Owl sitting on the top of that dead tree trunk.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 5 Apr 2015 18:09

Any sign of the owl. We have been watching the great tits going in and out of their house. I hope they survive while we are away for 2 weeks.
