Silly Sausage

Silly Sausage Report 3 Apr 2013 00:14

Just finished War Brides by Helen something got some really bad reviews on amazon mainly because it wasnt transcribe very well on to kindle her writing skills got a knock as well it was either 77p or free I cant remember, however I really enjoyed the story and was gripped its about 5 young women from WW2 , I thought it was almost well written, half way through this is predicable, but was suprised by the twist at the end. Worth a look ;-)

I've just read Wolf Hall Vera, good innit? :-) i'm ordering the sequel too.

In the meantime I'm reading a Harlan Coben thriller Stay Close......'a tour-de-force..with some of the most shocking action scenes in current crime fiction'.. but not reached those parts yet :-0

SuffolkVera Report 2 Apr 2013 17:04

I have at last read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. It took me a while to get into the style of writing but once I got going with it I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm now going to order Bring Up The Bodies from the library.

While I'm waiting for that I'm going to read Thursdays in the Park which I know everyone else read a while ago but I'm always behind.

I enjoyed those two books as well.
I buy so many books that it takes me ages to get round to them, and sometimes I no longer fancy them at all, so they go back to the chaity shops!

AnninGlos Report 28 Mar 2013 17:10

I enjoyed both of the especially the Kashmire Shawl.

ButtercupFields

ButtercupFields Report 28 Mar 2013 17:08

Have read neither of those, thanks Ann, and will have a look on Amazon to see the reviews, although I find those are not always in agreement with what I think! Picky? Moi? :-D <3

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 28 Mar 2013 17:05

The Kashmir shawl by Rosie Thomas

The distant hours by Kate Morton

AnninGlos Report 28 Mar 2013 16:57

Shame BC, I like her books but had not read this one, am halway through it. Oh you are sooo hard to please :-D

ButtercupFields

ButtercupFields Report 28 Mar 2013 16:54

Thank you Ann! That would have been a great choice but have read it already. I am still searching for something different...think that book with the woman who painted the eyeballs, has spoiled me a bit! :-D Am a restless reader right now :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 28 Mar 2013 16:40

Strange but I am not keen on her books. Still have Blackberry Wine on my book shelf waiting to be read.

Yes I too like to read books written in an area where I am in situ.

At last! The new Joanne Harris, "Peaches For Monsieur Le Cure" is out in paperback. Got it at Tesco this afternoon - it's their book of the week, and only costs £2.95. Will keep it for when we go to France next month - I like to read a book which is set in the country I'm visiting.

Geordie, I agree that it was not as good as Netherwood, maybe because it seemed a bit repetitive (of Netherwood).

GinN

GinN Report 28 Mar 2013 10:51

Ann, yes, I have read Netherwood, and enjoyed it. I can't say that Ravencliffe has been plaguerised from any particular book, just feel that these ideas and character portraits have appeared in one form or another in many other novels. If a third book is written, the format could become a little stale.
Having said that, it's still a good read, but for me, just not up to Netherwood! :-)

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 28 Mar 2013 10:02

You're welcome Mersey, do read it, it is a good book.

BC I know it is quite an old one but have you read One Good turn by Kate Atkinson? If you haven't I think you'd enjoy it.

Mersey

Mersey Report 27 Mar 2013 21:12

Good Evening all :-)

Ann thanks for letting us know about Labyrinth, I have actually never read the book so will be taping it first.

As for Ravenscliffe I did enjoy it but not as much as the first book.

Im still reading My Secret Sister I haven't got to the part over finding relatives through GR yet, so will have to wait and see......

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 27 Mar 2013 17:16

Can you explain more what you mean re Ravenscliffe Geordie? Do you mean plaguerised from another book. Have you read Netherwood?

GinN

GinN Report 27 Mar 2013 16:38

Still ploughing through Ravenscliffe. I'm enjoying it, but can't help but feel that some of the themes and characters have been "borrowed".
Next, I'm going to read Various Pets Alive and Dead by Marina Lewycka (author of Two Caravans and Short History of Tractors.....). I love her offbeat characters and quirky writing. I have a very eclectic choice of reading!
