Have finished 'Stairlift to Heaven' and really enjoyed
it, an easy laugh out loud read.

On to P Gregory's 'The Virgin's Lover'

Just finished Virgin Earth which I enjoyed although I wasn't always sure how much was historical fact and how much was made up novel.

Just started re-reading Nella Last's Peace. I first read it a long while ago. It's a follow-on from Nella Last's War which Victoria Wood made into a television drama called Housewife, 49. She must have been such a frustrated lady - she was expected to be "just a housewife" but had a good brain and could write well. Such a shame her writings were confined to her diaries for Mass Observation. (She can be a bit of an irritating prig though!)

The book I have just finished was The American Boy by Andrew Taylor.

Shortlisted by Richard and Judy back in 2005 and reviewed by The Independent as 'Deeply absorbing and beautifully written.. he creates an atmosphere close to Sarah Waters' Fingersmith'

I was really looking forward to it. Very disappointing - not easy to follow, and the atmosphere he created was nowhere near close to that created by Sarah in her books

Am ready to abandon the Margaret Drabble book...ok for classic scholars I suppose, but it seems to be dragging on a bit. Ann, let me know what you think of The Paris Wife as it looks interesting.

Will do BC, like it so far. TTried one Margaret Drabble once and didn't get on at all with it.

Valentine Grey seemed a bit disjointed in places, dodging between the war in Africa and life in London. Certainly opened my eyes to what went on in the Boer War. At times I could almost here Sandi Toksvig reading it to me, which I am not sure helped !!
