Morning Jude. The Moorhens are still here. They are so funny to watch on the top of the hedge and when they start to walk down the side of it hanging on with those great feet.
I have sent a photo of the baby ones that I mentioned.

Ohhh l see, thanks Jean. Apology excepted :o)) ...lol

Our squirrel was about 6ft from the patio doors earlier feeding off the wall, little tinker, fortunately the dog did'nt see him, but he ran off as l was taking a photo.
Did anyone watch Yolo (sp) Williams prgramme the other evening, l think it would have been on Welsh BBC 2. It was a catch up over the last 15 yrs of programmes he has done and seeing how the situation is now, brilliant!! well worth watching, perhaps it can be seen on BBCi ?

Madoc is doing well, he should be rid of the bucket collar anyday now. He only wears it at night time!!

Its pretty chilly here, quite a few birds about, especially chaffinch, c/doves, pigeons and blackbirds.

Jane....how are the moorhens. Will check the email addy for any photo's....pc is working better now so it won't be such hard work!!

DizzieLizzie....great to have the swans there:o))

Tec...hope all is well where you are!!?
Have a loverly day everyone

Thanks Jean, I must admit I was a bit puzzled by that. I had not realised we had any foreign blackbirds, I assume they are like the starlings and go home with the warmer weather. I was aware that some of the males we have had around are a lot bigger than others.

Jean (Monmouth) Report 10 Feb 2010 15:06

I want to correct the post by Jude, I did say that the blackbirds with bright yellow beaks at this time of year are foreigners. Unfortunately I did not explain myself properly. Our own blackbird males ar smaller than the foreign ones, and their beaks do not usually become bright until the mating season. I got this from an ornithologist, which I do not pretend to be. Sorry, Jude!

When I went down the garden to feed the ducks today a pair of swans appeared. Haven't seen any for a bit. They looked like a younger pair than the ones we usually see. In the usual pair the cob swan is huge and a bit feisty.

Because we hadn't seen any for a while I bought some special duck and swan food in the hope it would bring them back. The two that came today certainly appreciated it. It stays afloat so any that flows past them will stay afloat for others down river. They're supposed to take a while to get used to it but I thought they would already be used to it as there's a house on the A4 where the river goes under the road where the lady always has food out for them and there's usually a congregation of ducks and swans there. There's nearly always people with children looking over the wall of the bridge too.

I have just found a photo of baby Moorhens that my friend brought to me some years ago. They had been washed out of their nest in heavy rains.I think I have said on here before about them .I found someone to take them and drove from here in Kettering to the other side of Northampton with them in a cardboard box on the passenger seat.I think they were only days old.If I can get OH to scan the photo I will ask Jude to put it on her blog.

Jude

I've pm'd you but forgot to say it was me lol

Yes, there are usually many kites waiting in the trees. Have you seen the white kite? It used to wait in the trees and go in for last knockings of food, now it seems to have been accepted so just swoops in with the others.
I'm by no means an expert birder, Kites have just captured my interest.

Me again:o)

Bless the cat, she's waiting for you to make a path to her usual place:o)) lol

Island

Will have alook at the site, thank you. l dd look up the different kinds of Black Kites, l think there are 3.
We love t up there too, we usually do the Elan Valley on the same day as its quite a drive other wise. Let me know when you're next that way. The most birds we have seen are about 300.....l know the rspb have a warden that often see's more than that waiting in the trees. Plus somewhere it says as many as 1,000 have been seen....wow now that l would love to see:o))

It's been snowing here again for quite a while now although it's not settling. Managed to get some food out to the birds earlier whilst it was still quite fair. The ducks are getting used to the new food I've got for them, a few of them wait around for me to come out. Oops that almost got edited by one of the cats on her way up to the window sill. She sits there looking out and looking at me as if I can do something about it.

Hi Jude

I love it at Gigrin, so peaceful with fab scenery and very starry nights + Max lol

I has been confirmed that the Black Kite is indeed that, there are lots of photos on the blog now - and film.

I'd love to be there in the winter to see the kites in peak numbers and smart plumage.

I was putting some food onto one of our bird tables this morning, it is situated next to a fence. As I put the food in I was aware of being watched. I looked up and not a foot from where I was on the fence post was a blackbird. He didn't move and as soon as I stepped back he was on the table eating the food.

Morning all....don't know if this post will work or not, you might get 3 or 4 though:o)) lol

DizzieLizzie....that sounds great:o) your secret is safe with me...lol

Daff...we had 2 magpies this morning, 9 woodpigeons and 5 c/doves,, together, plus the usual chaffinches etc earlier. Plus the injured c/dove, he's hobbling about like the injured woodpigeon:o( they seem ok though!

Jean from Monmouth and her hubby came to visit last week and she was saying that the male blackbirds with the yellow beaks are'nt our native ones, ours are the brownish beaked ones, l did'nt know that:o)!

Jane...you are lucky with your moorhens and L/tailed tits:o)

Its a bit miserabe today, damp and trying to rain, also quite cold.

jude :o)

Edit....wow that posted straight away:o)
Daff....l don't we've ever had Jay here:o((
