We suddenly get a flurry of little birds .They look like some kind of Tit.There could be up to 20 or 30 (a guess) and they seem to come in a frenzy and then just disappear .
Woodpeckers still very active here.I hope you get your new laptop sorted Jude. How is Madoc doing?

Onway home we went to the Wetlands Trust at Newport, not alot going on there but its very relaxing, lovely coffee and cakes and very helpful staff. Had quite a chat with a smashing lad.

Saw an Egrette, juvenile (sp) and very young moorhens, a kestral, loads of mallards, sparrows and a few greenfinches on the feeders....and its FREE.

Not seen any Woodpeckers here for ages:o(

I was sat in bed this morning and heard a knocking noise .It was one of the Woodpeckers on that dead tree .I could see it tapping away like mad.It looked like it was head butting the tree trunk lol.

Talking of blackbirds.....l was watching one yesterday morning in neighbours garden eating an apple, if l had stayed watching it for one more minute l would have seen the sparrow hawk fly in and grab it:o(((( must admit l would sort of liked to have seen that, not in a marcarb way , but to see the hawk!:o))

l'm still trying to think of the name of those ducks Jane, or the possible name of them:o) it will come to me:o)

I have just discovered we have a blackbirds nest in the climbing rose on the arch .It is just a couple of feet above my head.I saw the adult fly in and then heard babies!!!!!.I was going to deadhead the roses ,but think I had better leave well alone for now.

Jane Report 27 Jul 2010 18:32

I have seen some funny kind of ducks. They were flying in a group and looked a silvery/white colour. They looked quite small and dainty compared to the mallard.Any ideas what type they could be?

Jane Report 25 Jul 2010 13:12

We had a little visitor this morning.I was woken by the sound of a lot of fluttering .It was a sparrow that had somehow flown in our bedroom window.Luckily the drawn curtain kept it from flying into the room.I just reached in behind the curtain and pushed the window a bit wider and off it flew.

Jane, sounds like a grass snake, thats how they behave, and are quite harmless. We used to get a lot round here, but have disappeared over the years. Frogs and toads we have plenty of, they love to get in the space around the drains, lift up a cover and ther is almost always one there. Birds have deserted us altogether since spring.

Jane Report 24 Jul 2010 16:26

My neighbour with the new lining in the fish pond has a 3 foot snake(grass I think).I said I would like a pic of it.So she will ring me when it is there, and hopefully I can dash down with camera. It swims in her pond ,and then lies on the stones around the pond.
Fingers crossed for Macoc's lump Jude.My Chester has a few lumps .One in particular bothers me but the vet says it is ok ,just to keep an eye on it.

~`*`Jude`*`~ Report 24 Jul 2010 13:24

We rescued another greenfinch yesterday, it hit the window. Put it in the garage for about half hr and it flew off fine:o)) very dazed at first:o(( bless it.

Madoc....his staples are still in, should come out Monday. He won't have an op just yet, see how the lump goes, vet thinks it has shrunk slightly:o))

The advice the rspb gave me re the finch desease.......is empty bird baths at night and keep dry till the morning. He thinks the desease is encouraged by moisture, hence other birds pass it on in the water. So we do as he suggested.

Would love to see an otter in the garden, next door have fish and the other side has just built a pond. We are'nt far from the river and have seen them on the banks:o))

I was reading today how otters, if they get too hungry will go into gardens and take the fish one man lost his really valuable large koi Carp that he'd had years.

Jean (Monmouth) Report 22 Jul 2010 19:43

My OH made a cover for our fishpond from some agricultural netting and some timber after we saw a heron by it. Have only lost a couple of fish since, when they have jumped out of the pond in a mating frenzy, and we have not seen them until too late.

Jane

Jane Report 22 Jul 2010 17:22

My neighbours put a new lining in their fishpond the day before yesterday,so it is all clear and clean again .They counted 50 fish.Since then the Heron has been flying over our house, heading their way !!!!!!!!.They do have a metal grill over the pond so I'm hoping all the fish are still there.

Jane Report 20 Jul 2010 22:19

I was so excited just now. There was a Barn Owl sat on the dead tree trunk.Too dark to take a photo ,plus I didn't have the camera outside. It didn't stay long, but I'm hoping now it has landed there once ,it might come back again.

Jude ,have pm'd you.
I got a pic of a Heron today. It was standing in the horses field next to the water trough .I wonder if it was hoping to find some fish lol
I also saw the woodpecker again on the dead tree and it disappeared into a hole!!!!.Then the Red Kite, and when out with the dog I saw a Hare.So I have seen all sorts today .
The squirrels have pinched all the Hazelnuts from our tree and have left all the husks on the lawn lol. There can't be much nut there as they are all green.

Just seen in the paper that the number of kestrels is declining, they think because of the cold winter.
