Dormouse Report 2 Feb 2009 23:04

Jude,
I may have got the name slightly wrong: it may be New Fancy Viewpoint or just plain New Fancy, but I'm sure you'll find it ok. They have wild boar there too; we stopped and chatted to a man yesterday who showed us a photo he'd taken earlier of three young wild boar following him and his dogs along a track.

Many thanks Dormouse,l have made a note of that. Not heard of that car park and had'nt realised the Hawfinch are so elusive. We're not far from there so willpersuade hubby to take a drive out:o))
l used to work in the Forest and we visited various car parks and forestry sites maybe New Fancy View was one of them!!

Dormouse Report 2 Feb 2009 22:09

Jude,
The hawfinch, bless it, was extremely accommodating and was visiting the feeders at New Fancy View car park, along with the bramblings, nuthatches, blue, great and coal tits, chaffinch, greenfinch etc. Someone has been putting food down regularly. We visited this site last month and thought we'd seen a hawfinch near the feeders but it flew off before we could get a 'scope on it.
New Fancy View (OS Grid Reference: SO 628095) is one of the best UK sites to see goshawks. We didn't see any yesterday but to be honest, I didn't care because of the hawfinch. (For anyone not sure what the fuss is about, I know bird watchers with 20 years experience who have yet to see one of these reclusive elusive birds).
As an added bonus, we also saw 20 mandarin ducks on a large lake nearby.

Jean (Monmouth) Report 2 Feb 2009 19:59

The birds love the waterfall on our pond as it is the only certain water around when it freezes, unless they take a trip to the Monnow. Road outside is covered again though it was salted earlier by the council, who also salted the front steps and pavement of the bungalows. Never done it before, much appreciated by us oldies.

Did you say Forest of Dean,?? where in the Forest of Dean??

l wonder if that means that the Birds of Prey Centre will go aswell then at Hurrans, and the other bird shop they have:o((((( l do hope not our grandson loves the birds of prey, he really gets upset if we move away from the owls, bless him!!

Hi Liz,
Small birds love using nesting boxes as cosy roosting shelters. You can also get twine/raffia woven things called roosting pockets, to hang up in trees.

Bird highlight of the year so far: I had a cracking view of a hawfinch yesterday. Not in my Shropshire garden sadly, but in the Forest of Dean, in Gloucestershire. Also five very spruce looking bramblings and two green woodpeckers.

Hi Jude, yes we have plenty of snow. Had enough of it now, pretty as it looks!! The Hurrans is the one in Churchdown where I have been able to meet with several GR friends, it has gone into administration, but so have all the others as far as I know.

Hello Jeannie, good to see you. Have you had your holiday? Can't remember when you were going.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 2 Feb 2009 17:21

I saw something on tv the other day about having lots of nesting boxes as not only do the birds nest in them, hopefully, but use them as shelter in bad weather.
Had a dozen starlings squabbling over stuff on the bird table a while ago but getting dark now. Lots of stuff out for them this morning and will get more ready for tomorrow, I put it out before I go to bed in the early hours so they have it as soon as it's light and not time for it to freeze up.
Not seen many birds this winter but our blackbirds are back as well as the starlings. I think because we have so many big trees and the field next to the garden they find a lot of stuff anyway and most of the folk along here feed them too.

Hello Snow White

Which Hurrans are you talking about, is it the one on Kidderminster road from Halesowen??
l put some baked potato out and thesnow covered it up pretty quick, but blackbirds and a jackdaw found it, still some there for the morning:o))
5 blackbirds out there all scurrying around and bossing each other about, the same with the woodpigeons, so bossy to one another!!
Woodpecker turned up and guess what.......the dog frightened it away....grr
The usual robin and chaffinches, not many though.
l'd love a robin sitting on my window ledge:o)

Gosh Ann you must have more snow than us then, the patio is just wet now but we have about 2" on the lawns. Enjoy your time in the Lake District:o)

Hi Jude, yes it is me. Yes we have lots of snow here, in fact T took our car down the drive intending to bring it back up and thus clear the drive but he couldn't get it round the bend at the top so had to leave it at the bottom, it is very steep. The car is now parked in the pub car park 5 minutes down the road.. Been feeding the birds here, bought some ground nuts yesterday and put them out just now, we have blackbirds robins, bluetits, dunnocks all feeding together.

Whirley Report 2 Feb 2009 14:20

I've been topping up my nut feeders all morning and I ground a load of nuts up (as I do anyway) for the ground feeding/small birds...Had some chips leftover from last nights tea, so they went into the food processer and put those out too...

My 2 Robins have been coming to my window seal as normal for their grated cheese..
